Leviticus 14:4

Listen to this article

“Then shall the priest command to take for him that is to be cleansed two birds alive and clean, and cedar wood, and scarlet, and hyssop.”

Leviticus 14:4 is part of a larger section in the book of Leviticus that deals with the purification of lepers and the cleansing of houses affected by leprosy. Leprosy was a serious skin disease in ancient times, and it was considered unclean and contagious. The procedures outlined in Leviticus were given to the Israelites by God through Moses to maintain cleanliness and spiritual purity.

In this verse, the priest is instructed on how to initiate the cleansing process for a person who has been healed of leprosy. Let’s break down the different elements mentioned:

Two birds alive and clean:The first requirement is two living birds that are clean. These birds were likely to be sparrows or turtle doves. They were chosen as part of the purification ritual and represented the release of the person from their diseased state. One bird would be killed, and the other would be set free.

Cedar wood:Cedar wood was used as part of the cleansing ritual. It was known for its aromatic properties and its ability to resist decay. Symbolically, cedar wood represented the preservation of life and protection against contamination.

Scarlet:The use of scarlet in this context is not entirely clear. Scarlet was a colour associated with royalty and wealth, and it was often used in the construction of the tabernacle and priestly garments. It may have been included here to represent the restoration of the person to a position of purity and honour within the community.

Hyssop:Hyssop was a small aromatic plant that was commonly used for cleansing and purification purposes. It was used to sprinkle water or blood during various rituals, symbolising the removal of impurity and the restoration of spiritual cleanliness.

Together, these elements were part of a symbolic ritual that served as a physical representation of the spiritual cleansing and healing of the individual who had been afflicted with leprosy. The rituals outlined in Leviticus were specific to the Old Testament laws and regulations, and they were fulfilled and superseded by the coming of Jesus Christ in the New Testament.

As Christians, we can learn from these passages by recognising the importance of spiritual purity and the need for cleansing. In the New Testament, Jesus Christ is often referred to as the Great High Priest who offers ultimate cleansing and forgiveness of sins through His sacrificial death and resurrection. Therefore, while we may not perform these specific rituals today, we can find spiritual cleansing and healing through faith in Jesus Christ.
