But hee shall let goe the liuing bird out of the citie into the open fields, and make an atonement for the house: and it shall be cleane. Leviticus 14:53 (KJV)
Leviticus 14 provides detailed instructions for the purification of a leper, as well as the cleansing of a house that has been contaminated by a leprous plague. This verse specifically addresses the cleansing of the house after the ritual has been performed.
In the preceding verses two birds are mentioned—a living bird and a slain bird. The living bird is released into the open fields, while the slain bird’s blood is used in the cleansing ritual. This symbolism represents the concept of purification and atonement. The living bird represents the one being cleansed, and its release signifies the freedom and restoration of the person or house from impurity.
By releasing the living bird into the open fields, the person performing the ritual signifies the removal of impurity and the separation from the effects of the leprous plague. The act represents the complete restoration and freedom from the contamination that had afflicted the house.
The atonement made for the house involves the use of blood from a slain bird, hyssop, scarlet material, and cedar wood (Leviticus 14:49‑52). These elements were used to cleanse the house and make it ceremonially clean again. The blood of the slain bird, combined with the other materials, was sprinkled on the house seven times to purify it.
Spiritual lessons for believers emerge from this ceremony. Leprosy in the Bible often symbolises sin and its defiling effects; just as leprosy defiled the house, sin defiles our lives and separates us from God. The process of atonement in Leviticus 14 serves as a foreshadowing of the ultimate atonement made by Jesus Christ. His sacrificial death on the cross made it possible for us to be cleansed from sin and restored to a right relationship with God. The release of the living bird represents the freedom and restoration we experience through Jesus Christ. Through His sacrifice we are set free from the power and penalty of sin, and we can experience true spiritual cleansing and renewal. The cleansing of the house reflects the importance of maintaining a pure and holy environment. As believers we are called to live holy lives and create an atmosphere of spiritual cleanliness in our hearts and homes.
It is important to note that the ceremonial laws in Leviticus were fulfilled by Jesus Christ and are no longer binding on Christians today. However, studying these rituals can help us appreciate the depth and significance of Christ’s sacrifice and understand the principles of purity and atonement in the Bible.
