Leviticus 15:17

Posted on 10 September 2023
Listen to this article

“And every garment, and every skin, whereon is the seed of copulation, shall be washed with water, and be unclean until the even.”

Context:Leviticus is a book in the Old Testament that contains various laws and regulations given by God to the Israelites through Moses. These laws cover a wide range of topics, including ceremonial cleanliness, moral conduct, and instructions for worship. Leviticus 15 specifically addresses the laws regarding bodily discharges and their impact on ritual purity.

Explanation:In Leviticus 15:17, God provides instructions regarding cleanliness after sexual relations. This verse emphasises the importance of maintaining ritual purity and cleanliness in the context of sexual activity. According to this verse, any garment or skin that comes into contact with the "seed of copulation" (semen) should be washed with water. Failure to do so would render the item unclean until the evening.

It’s important to note that the laws outlined in Leviticus, including this verse, were part of the Mosaic Law given to the Israelites. These laws served to distinguish the Israelites as a holy people set apart for God’s purposes. The regulations regarding bodily discharges, including sexual emissions, aimed to teach the Israelites about maintaining purity and holiness in their daily lives.

Application:
While the ceremonial laws of the Old Testament, including those found in Leviticus, are not binding on Christians today, there are some principles we can glean from this verse:

  • Purity and holiness:Leviticus emphasises the importance of maintaining purity and holiness before God. As Christians, we are called to live lives that reflect God’s holiness, both in our actions and our thought life (1 Peter 1:15-16).
  • Sanctity of sexual intimacy:This verse highlights the sacredness of sexual intimacy within the bounds of marriage. It reminds us that sexual activity is a special gift from God that should be treated with honour and respect (Hebrews 13:4).
  • Personal hygiene:Although the ceremonial aspects of the Levitical laws are no longer applicable, the principle of personal hygiene is still relevant today. This verse serves as a reminder of the importance of cleanliness and taking care of our bodies, which are temples of the Holy Spirit (1 Corinthians 6:19-20).

Overall, while Leviticus 15:17 has specific instructions for the Israelites under the Mosaic Law, it reminds us of the broader principles of purity, honouring marriage, and personal hygiene that are still applicable in the lives of believers today.
