And in the fifth year shall ye eat of the fruit thereof, that it may yield unto you the increase thereof: I am the Lord your God.

Context

Leviticus 19 gathers many instructions for Israel, covering holiness, respect for parents, honesty, and care for the poor. Verses 23 to 25 give a specific rule about fruit trees in the Promised Land. For three years the fruit was to be treated as uncircumcised, and in the fourth year it was holy to the Lord. Only in the fifth year could the people eat it freely.

Meaning

The command to wait until the fifth year taught patience and trust. The tree needed time to become strong and bear well. By waiting, the people showed that they relied on God’s timing, not on quick gain. The phrase “that it may yield unto you the increase thereof” means that obedience leads to a richer harvest. God promised that the tree would produce abundantly when His word was followed.

The closing words “I am the LORD your God” are not a simple signature. They remind Israel that this law comes from the covenant God who brought them out of Egypt. He is the owner of the land and the source of every good gift. His command carries authority, and His promise carries certainty.
