Leviticus 20:27

Posted on 14 September 2023
Listen to this article

“A man also or woman that hath a familiar spirit, or that is a wizard, shall surely be put to death: they shall stone them with stones: their blood shall be upon them.”

Context:The book of Leviticus is part of the Pentateuch, the first five books of the Bible, which are traditionally attributed to Moses. Leviticus specifically deals with the laws and regulations given by God to the Israelites concerning their worship, daily life, and moral conduct.

Prohibition against Witchcraft:Leviticus 20:27 addresses the prohibition against individuals who practice divination, sorcery, or consult familiar spirits. This verse condemns those who engage in occult practices such as witchcraft, fortune-telling, or seeking supernatural guidance from spirits.

Severity of the Punishment:The verse states that individuals found guilty of practising witchcraft or having a familiar spirit were to be put to death by stoning. Stoning was a common method of capital punishment in ancient Israel, and it signified a severe consequence for violating God’s law.

God’s View on Witchcraft:The reason for the strict prohibition against witchcraft and divination in the Bible is rooted in God’s character and his desire for the Israelites to worship and trust in Him alone. Witchcraft and sorcery involve seeking supernatural power and guidance outside of God’s authority and can lead people astray from the true worship of God.

Spiritual Implications:The Bible consistently warns against involvement in occult practices due to their spiritual dangers. Engaging in witchcraft or seeking guidance from familiar spirits opens doors to demonic influence, deception, and spiritual harm. God desires his people to seek Him for guidance and trust in His provision rather than turning to occult practices.

New Testament Perspective:While the Old Testament law carries important principles and lessons, it is crucial to consider the overall message of the Bible. In the New Testament, the sacrificial system and many of the specific laws in Leviticus were fulfilled in Jesus Christ. Christians are no longer bound by the Mosaic Law’s ceremonial aspects. However, the moral principles behind God’s laws remain relevant.

Application for Today:As Christians, we are called to discern and reject practices that involve seeking supernatural guidance or power from sources other than God. This includes avoiding involvement in witchcraft, sorcery, and any form of the occult. Instead, we should place our trust in God, seek His guidance through prayer, study His Word, and rely on the power of the Holy Spirit.

It is important to note that the Bible’s teachings on witchcraft in Leviticus should not be used to promote harm, discrimination, or violence against individuals involved in occult practices. Christians are called to love their neighbours and share the message of salvation in Jesus Christ with compassion and respect.

Remember to consult your local church or pastor for further guidance and interpretation of specific Bible verses, as they can provide additional insights and context.
