Leviticus 24:12

Posted on 17 September 2023
Listen to this article

“And they put him in ward, that the mind of the LORD might be shewed them.”

Context:Leviticus 24 contains various regulations and instructions given by God to the Israelites concerning the tabernacle, the priests, and the people. This particular verse focuses on an incident involving an Israelite man and the importance of seeking God’s guidance in matters of judgment.

Understanding the incident:Prior to verse 12, an Israelite man, whose mother was an Israelite and his father an Egyptian, got into a fight with another Israelite in the camp. During the altercation, the man blasphemed the name of the Lord and cursed. The bystanders brought him to Moses for judgment (Leviticus 24:10-11).

The significance of putting him in ward:In response to the offense committed by the man, the people placed him in custody or “ward.” This action served two purposes. First, it ensured that he would be restrained until God’s will was made clear concerning the matter. Second, it allowed time for Moses and the people to seek God’s guidance and understand His mind regarding the appropriate course of action.

Seeking the mind of the LORD:The phrase “that the mind of the LORD might be shewed them” emphasizes the Israelites’ desire to discern God’s will and obtain His guidance in matters of judgment. This incident highlights the importance of seeking divine wisdom and direction rather than relying solely on human understanding or personal judgment. By waiting for God’s revelation, the Israelites acknowledged His authority and sought His guidance for righteous judgment.

Application for believers today:Although we may not encounter identical situations, the underlying principle of seeking God’s mind and guidance remains relevant for believers today. When faced with difficult decisions, conflicts, or disputes, we should approach them with a humble and seeking heart, desiring to discern God’s will. Through prayer, studying God’s Word, seeking counsel from wise believers, and relying on the Holy Spirit, we can invite God’s wisdom into our decision-making processes.

Honoring God’s name:The incident in Leviticus 24:12 also underscores the importance of honoring and revering God’s name. Blaspheming and cursing the name of the Lord was a serious offense in the Old Testament, and the Israelites recognized the need for just consequences for such an act. As believers, we are called to honor and respect the name of the Lord in our words, actions, and attitudes, recognizing the holiness and majesty of God.

In conclusion, Leviticus 24:12 highlights the Israelites’ desire to seek God’s mind and guidance in matters of judgment. By placing the offender in custody, they acknowledged the need for God’s wisdom and revelation. This verse serves as a reminder for believers today to seek God’s guidance in decision-making and to honor His name in all aspects of our lives.
