Numbers 1:8

Posted on 1 October 2023
Listen to this article

“Of Issachar; Nethaneel the son of Zuar.”

This verse is part of a larger passage found in Numbers 1:1-16, where God commands Moses to take a census of the Israelites in the wilderness. The purpose of this census was to determine the number of eligible men for military service from each tribe. Each tribe’s representative leader is mentioned along with the name of his father.

In this specific verse, the tribe of Issachar is being accounted for, and Nethaneel, the son of Zuar, is identified as the representative leader of this tribe. The tribe of Issachar was one of the twelve tribes of Israel, descended from Issachar, the ninth son of Jacob (also known as Israel) and Leah.

Although this verse appears to be a simple listing of names, it highlights the meticulous organisation and orderliness with which God instructed the Israelites in their journey through the wilderness. God wanted the people to be organised and prepared for the tasks and responsibilities that lay ahead.

Context:The entire book of Numbers contains numerous accounts of how God guided the Israelites during their time in the wilderness, providing instructions for their camp arrangement, priestly duties, and journey towards the Promised Land. This census recorded in Numbers 1 played a crucial role in establishing the structure and organisation of the Israelite community during their wilderness wanderings.

Overall, Numbers 1:8 serves as a reminder of the importance of order, structure, and organisation in carrying out God’s plans. It encourages us to be diligent and responsible in fulfilling the tasks and responsibilities assigned to us, knowing that God values order and purpose in all aspects of life.
