Numbers 1:27

Listen to this article

“Those that were numbered of them, even of the tribe of Judah, were threescore and fourteen thousand and six hundred.”

Context and Background:The book of Numbers is the fourth book of the Old Testament and continues the narrative of the Israelites’ journey from Egypt to the Promised Land. It takes its name from the numerous censuses and counting of the people that occur throughout the book. In Numbers 1, God commands Moses to conduct a census of all the able-bodied men of the twelve tribes of Israel.

Verse Analysis:In Numbers 1:27, the focus is on the tribe of Judah. The verse states that the number of men from the tribe of Judah who were counted in the census was 74,600. This figure represents only the men who were twenty years old or above and eligible for military service.

The tribe of Judah was one of the twelve tribes of Israel and held a significant position among the tribes. The name “Judah” means “praise” or “praised,” and it is from this tribe that King David and, later, Jesus Christ descended. The tribe of Judah settled in the southern region of Canaan, which later became the territory of Judah during the division of the kingdom.

The purpose of the census was to determine the military strength of the Israelites as they prepared to enter the Promised Land. The book of Numbers places a significant emphasis on order, organization, and the positioning of the tribes during their journey and subsequent settlement.

Spiritual Lessons:

  • God’s Order and Organization:The census conducted in Numbers 1 highlights God’s emphasis on order and organization. He desired the Israelites to be prepared and ready for the challenges they would face in their journey. This principle reminds us that God is a God of order and that we should seek to align ourselves with His divine order in our lives.
  • God’s Faithfulness in Counting His People:The act of numbering the Israelites demonstrates God’s faithfulness to His promises. He had previously promised Abraham that his descendants would be as numerous as the stars in the sky (Genesis 15:5), and the census serves as a reminder of God’s fulfillment of that promise. It reassured the Israelites that God was faithfully leading them and that He had a plan for each tribe and individual.
  • Importance of Individual Contribution:Each tribe had a specific role and position in the journey and settlement of the Israelites. Similarly, in the body of Christ, every individual has a unique role to play. Just as the tribe of Judah had its purpose, God has equipped and positioned each believer with unique gifts and talents to contribute to His kingdom. We should recognize the value of our individual contributions and strive to use them for God’s glory.
  • Preparation for the Journey:The census helped the Israelites to gauge their military strength and preparedness for the challenges ahead. It serves as a reminder that we need to be prepared spiritually for the journey of life. Through regular self-examination, prayer, and study of God’s Word, we can assess our spiritual strength and be equipped to face the trials and temptations that come our way.
  • God’s Sovereignty:The counting of the people emphasized God’s sovereignty over the Israelites. He not only knew each person by name but also cared for them individually. This truth reassures us that God knows us intimately, and He is aware of our circumstances, needs, and strengths. We can trust in His providence and guidance as we navigate through life.
