Numbers 1:28

Posted on 1 October 2023
Listen to this article

“Of the children of Issachar, by their generations, after their families, by the house of their fathers, according to the number of the names, from twenty years old and upward, all that were able to go forth to war.”

Context:The book of Numbers is the fourth book of the Bible and is named after the two censuses or numberings of the Israelites recorded in chapters 1 and 26. The book covers the period of the Israelites’ journey from Mount Sinai to the edge of the Promised Land. In chapter 1, God commanded Moses to take a census of all the males from the age of 20 and above who were able to go to war.

The tribe of Issachar:In this verse, the focus is on the tribe of Issachar. Issachar was one of the twelve tribes of Israel, and they were descendants of Jacob’s son, Issachar. The tribe of Issachar settled in the northern part of Canaan. They were known for their wisdom and understanding of the times (1 Chronicles 12:32). This verse indicates that the men from the tribe of Issachar who were eligible for military service were counted in the census.

Census and military service:The purpose of the census was to determine the number of men available for military service among the Israelites. The men who were counted in the census were those who were twenty years old and above and physically able to go to war. This highlights the importance of military preparedness and the need for able-bodied men to defend the community and participate in battles when required.

Responsibility and unity:The census served as a reminder of the responsibilities and roles assigned to each tribe and family within the nation of Israel. Each tribe had a specific area of the camp and a designated order in which they would travel during their journey. The census helped organize the people according to their families and tribes, ensuring unity and order among the Israelites.

Application:While this verse specifically addresses a historical context, it carries some relevant principles for believers today. It reminds us of the importance of responsibility and unity within the community of faith. Just as the Israelites needed to be prepared for battles and work together as a unified nation, Christians are called to be vigilant and united in their spiritual journey. We should recognize our individual roles and responsibilities within the body of Christ and work together in harmony for the advancement of God’s kingdom.

In conclusion, Numbers 1:28 gives us a glimpse into the census taken among the tribe of Issachar and emphasizes the importance of responsibility and unity within the community of faith. While the context is specific to the Israelites’ journey to the Promised Land, the principles of preparedness, responsibility, and unity can be applied to our spiritual lives today.
