Listen to this article

“Those that were numbered of them, even of the tribe of Issachar, were fifty and four thousand and four hundred.”

Context:The book of Numbers is the fourth book in the Old Testament and focuses on the Israelites’ journey from Mount Sinai to the Promised Land. It includes various census counts and provides an account of the organisation and preparation of the Israelite community for their journey.

The Tribe of Issachar:Issachar was one of the twelve tribes of Israel and was the ninth son of Jacob and the fifth son of Leah. The tribe of Issachar played a significant role in the history of Israel. In this verse, it states that the tribe of Issachar numbered 54,400 individuals.

Importance of Numbering:The numbering of the tribes was done to establish the military strength and organisation of the Israelite community. It helped in identifying the eligible men for military service, as well as in allocating land and resources.

Unity and Purpose:The numbering of the tribes emphasised the unity and organisation of the Israelites as they prepared to enter the Promised Land. Each tribe had its specific role and responsibilities, contributing to the overall functioning of the community.

God’s Faithfulness:The large number of individuals in the tribe of Issachar demonstrates God’s faithfulness in fulfilling His promise to make the descendants of Jacob as numerous as the stars. It reaffirms God’s covenant with the Israelites and reminds them of His providence and protection.

Significance of Numbers:In the Bible, numbers often carry symbolic meaning. While the exact significance of the number 54,400 is not explicitly stated, the number emphasises the magnitude of the tribe of Issachar. It represents a substantial portion of the Israelite community and highlights the strength and significance of this particular tribe.

Application:This verse reminds us of the importance of unity, organisation, and recognising the unique roles each person plays within a community. It also encourages us to trust in God’s faithfulness, knowing that He will fulfil His promises and provide for His people.

In summary, Numbers 1:29 (KJV) highlights the numbering of the tribe of Issachar, emphasising their significant presence within the Israelite community. It serves as a reminder of God’s faithfulness and the importance of unity and organisation in fulfilling His purposes.
