Numbers 1:33

Listen to this article

"Of Zebulun; Eliab the son of Helon."

Context:The book of Numbers is the fourth book in the Old Testament, and it records the events of the Israelites’ journey from Mount Sinai to the Promised Land. In Numbers 1, God commands Moses to take a census of the Israelites, organizing them by their tribes and counting the number of able-bodied men for military purposes.

Zebulun:Zebulun was one of the twelve tribes of Israel, named after Zebulun, the sixth son of Jacob and Leah. The tribe of Zebulun settled in the northern part of Canaan, between the Sea of Galilee and the Mediterranean Sea.

Eliab:Eliab was the son of Helon and the representative leader chosen from the tribe of Zebulun for the census. He played a role in the administration and organization of the tribe during the time of Moses and the wilderness journey.

Lessons to learn:

  • Unity and organisation:The census in Numbers highlights the importance of organisation and unity within the community of God’s people. God instructed Moses to count the people and organise them by tribes, which emphasised the need for structure and orderliness among the Israelites. This principle can also be applied to the church today, emphasising the importance of unity and organisation in carrying out God’s purposes.
  • Individual representation:Each tribe had a representative leader. Eliab was the appointed leader for the tribe of Zebulun. This demonstrates that God values individual representation and leadership within the community. It reminds us that every individual has a unique role and responsibility within the body of Christ.
  • God’s faithfulness:The fact that God commanded the census and knew the number of each tribe shows His faithfulness and concern for His people. He was not only aware of their numbers but also mindful of their needs and challenges. This reminds us that God is intimately involved in the lives of His people, and He cares about every detail of our lives.

Application:

  • Unity in diversity:The diversity among the twelve tribes of Israel reflects the diversity within the body of Christ today. Just as the tribes had different roles and responsibilities, we also have unique gifts and talents to contribute to the community of believers. We should embrace our diversity and work together in unity to fulfil God’s purposes.
  • Leadership and responsibility:Like Eliab, leaders are called to guide and represent their respective communities. If you are in a leadership position, whether in the church or elsewhere, seek to lead with integrity, serving as a representative of the people under your care.
  • Trust in God’s faithfulness:The census in Numbers reveals God’s faithfulness to His people. Even in challenging times, we can trust that God is aware of our situation and that He will provide for our needs. Remember to rely on His guidance and trust in His faithfulness as you navigate through life’s journey.

Remember to read the surrounding verses and consult commentaries or Bible study resources for a more comprehensive understanding of the passage.
