Numbers 1:35

Posted on 7 October 2023
Listen to this article

“And those that were numbered of them by their families were two thousand seven hundred and fifty.”

Numbers 1:35 is part of the context of the census taken of the Israelites in the wilderness, as commanded by God. In this verse, the specific group being mentioned is the tribe of Benjamin. This verse provides the number of men from the tribe of Benjamin who were eligible for military service and were counted in the census.

To gain a better understanding of this verse, it’s helpful to examine the broader context. In the book of Numbers, Moses is instructed by God to take a census of the Israelites who were twenty years old and above and capable of going to war. The purpose of this census was to organise the Israelite community, determine their military strength, and prepare for their journey to the Promised Land.

Each tribe was counted separately, and in Numbers 1:35, the focus is on the tribe of Benjamin. The verse states that there were 2,750 men in the tribe of Benjamin who were eligible for military service.

The significance of this verse lies in the fact that it highlights the organisation and orderliness with which the Israelites were being prepared for their journey. By taking a census and determining the number of eligible warriors in each tribe, they could ensure that they were adequately prepared for any potential conflicts they might face along the way.

Furthermore, the specific number mentioned in this verse, 2,750, emphasises the strength and potential of the tribe of Benjamin. It serves as a reminder that God had chosen and blessed the Israelites as a chosen people and that they were capable of fulfilling the task set before them.

As we study this verse, we can also reflect on the importance of being organised and prepared in our own lives. Just as the Israelites were instructed to prepare for their journey, we too should strive to be prepared for the tasks and challenges we face. Through careful planning and reliance on God’s guidance, we can navigate life’s journey with confidence and trust.

In conclusion, Numbers 1:35 provides us with a glimpse into the organisation and preparation of the Israelites as they prepared to journey to the Promised Land. It reminds us of the importance of being prepared and organised in our own lives, while also highlighting the strength and potential of God’s chosen people.
