Numbers 3:8

Posted on 11 November 2023
Listen to this article

“And they shall keep all the instruments of the tabernacle of the congregation, and the charge of the children of Israel, to do the service of the tabernacle.”

Context:The book of Numbers is the fourth book of the Bible and continues the account of the Israelites’ journey from Egypt to the Promised Land. In this verse, God is giving specific instructions to Moses regarding the Levites and their responsibilities in the service of the tabernacle.

The Levites:In the previous verses, God commanded Moses to take a census of the Levites and assign them specific duties in the tabernacle. The Levites were set apart for the service of God and were not counted among the other tribes of Israel. They were responsible for the care, transportation, and assembly of the tabernacle, as well as the performance of various tasks related to worship.

Instruments of the Tabernacle:The Levites were entrusted with the responsibility of keeping and caring for all the instruments and articles used in the tabernacle. These included the various furnishings, such as the ark of the covenant, the table of showbread, the menorah, and the altar of incense. It was their duty to ensure that these sacred objects were handled and transported with reverence and in accordance with God’s instructions.

Charge of the Children of Israel:In addition to their responsibility for the tabernacle’s instruments, the Levites were also entrusted with the oversight and care of the children of Israel. They were to assist the priests in their duties, teach the people about God’s laws, and help maintain order and sanctity within the camp. The Levites played a crucial role in mediating between God and the people, ensuring that the Israelites could approach God in worship and receive His blessings.

Application:The passage highlights the importance of stewardship, obedience, and service in the worship of God. The Levites serve as an example of dedication and faithfulness in their role as custodians of the tabernacle and shepherds of God’s people. Today, as believers, we are called to be faithful stewards of the resources and gifts God has entrusted to us. We should also seek to serve and minister to others, just as the Levites served the children of Israel.

In conclusion, Numbers 3:8 teaches us about the responsibilities and duties of the Levites in the service of the tabernacle and the children of Israel. It reminds us of the importance of faithful stewardship, obedience to God’s instructions, and serving others in the worship and work of God.
