Numbers 3:22

Those that were numbered of them, according to the number of all the males, from a month old and upward, even those that were numbered of them were seven thousand and five hundred.

Numbers 3:22 (KJV)

This verse records the census of the Gershonite Levites, commanded by God to Moses and Aaron (Numbers 3:14-16). Gershon was Levi’s eldest son. Unlike the military census of the other tribes, which counted men twenty years old and upward (Numbers 1:3), this count included every male from one month old, showing that all were set apart for holy service.

The number 7,500 refers to all Gershonite males aged one month and above. This precise record shows God’s orderly care for worship. The Gershonites were responsible for the tabernacle’s curtains, coverings, and hangings (Numbers 3:25-26). Their service was essential, though less visible than the work of the Kohathites, who numbered 8,600 (Numbers 3:28), or the Merarites, who numbered 6,200 (Numbers 3:34).

The Levites were chosen to replace the firstborn males of Israel, who were redeemed through them (Numbers 3:11-13, 3:40-51). Counting from a month old signified that even the youngest were consecrated to the Lord. The total of all male Levites was 22,000 (Numbers 3:39), and they were not numbered for war because they had no tribal inheritance; instead, they served the tabernacle (Numbers 1:47-53). This census was distinct from the military census, and it shows that God’s service includes all ages.

God values every person’s service, regardless of age or prominence. The Gershonites’ work with coverings and curtains was vital for the tabernacle’s function. Likewise, faithful service in less visible tasks honors God. This verse also reminds believers that dedication to the Lord begins early and includes the whole community. Even the youngest were counted, showing that no one is too small to be set apart for God.

Consider how God’s detailed record of each Gershonite male reflects His personal knowledge of every believer. The census was not merely administrative; it expressed God’s covenant faithfulness. As the Gershonites were counted for service, so each Christian is known and called by name to serve in God’s house.
