Numbers 4:12

And they shall take all the instruments of ministry, wherewith they minister in the sanctuary, and put them in a cloth of blue, and cover them with a covering of badgers’ skins, and shall put them on a bar:

Numbers 4:12 (KJV)

Numbers 4 records God’s detailed instructions for the Levites during Israel’s wilderness journey. The Kohathites were assigned to carry the Tabernacle’s sacred objects. This verse specifies how they must prepare those objects for transport.

The “instruments of ministry” are the holy items used in worship, such as the golden lampstand and the altar of incense. Each was wrapped in a blue cloth, a colour linked to heaven and God’s dwelling. Then a covering of badgers’ skins was added, providing durable protection from weather and damage. Finally, the covered items were placed on a bar, or staves, so they could be carried without direct contact.

This careful process had a serious purpose. The Kohathites were not allowed to touch the holy things directly, as Numbers 4:15 warns, so the coverings prevented desecration and death. The blue cloth distinguished the sacred from the ordinary, while the skins safeguarded them. The bar enabled orderly transport and shared the weight among bearers.

The New Testament calls believers a holy priesthood (1 Peter 2:5), offering spiritual sacrifices. Just as the Levites handled God’s dwelling with reverence, Christians are to treat worship, ministry, and the Word with awe. The coverings also picture how Christ covers and sanctifies our service, making it acceptable to God.

God’s detailed instructions show that He cares for sacred things and expects His people to follow His methods faithfully. The passage calls believers to approach worship with humility and order, not carelessness. It also reminds us that ministry is a shared responsibility, carried together with others.

Consider how you handle the things of God in daily life. Do you treat worship and service with the same reverence the Levites showed? The blue cloth and protective skins remind us that God’s holiness demands respect, and His grace covers those who serve Him faithfully.
