Numbers 4:14

Listen to this article

“And they shall put upon it all the vessels thereof, wherewith they minister about it, even the censers, the fleshhooks, and the shovels, and the basons, all the vessels of the altar; and they shall spread upon it a covering of badgers’ skins, and put to the staves of it.”

Context:The book of Numbers is the fourth book of the Old Testament and provides an account of the Israelites’ journey from Mount Sinai to the Promised Land. In this particular verse, God is instructing Moses regarding the specific responsibilities and procedures for the Levites who were in charge of transporting the various items used in the tabernacle.

The Tabernacle:The tabernacle was a portable sanctuary that served as the dwelling place of God among the Israelites during their time in the wilderness. It contained several sacred objects, including the altar for burnt offerings. The verse emphasizes the responsibility of the Levites in handling and transporting the vessels and implements used in the tabernacle.

Ministering to the Altar:The Levites were responsible for ministering to the altar, which involved offering sacrifices and maintaining the sacred space. They were tasked with handling the various vessels, such as censers (used for burning incense), fleshhooks (used for handling meat during sacrifices), shovels (used for removing ashes from the altar), and basins (used for holding water for ceremonial purposes).

Covering of Badgers’ Skins:The verse mentions spreading a covering of badgers’ skins upon the vessels. The exact identification of the animal referred to as “badgers” in the KJV is uncertain, as the Hebrew term used is somewhat ambiguous. Some translations suggest it could refer to sealskins, goatskins, or a type of fine leather. The purpose of the covering was to protect the vessels during transportation.

Staves:The verse also mentions putting staves to the altar. Staves were long poles used to carry and transport heavy objects. The staves were inserted through rings attached to the corners of the altar, enabling the Levites to lift and carry it when necessary.

Symbolic Meaning:While this verse primarily deals with practical instructions for the Levites, it also serves as a reminder of the importance of reverence, order, and careful handling of sacred objects and worship. The vessels used in the tabernacle had specific purposes and were to be treated with respect and care.

In summary, Numbers 4:14 highlights the responsibilities of the Levites in ministering to the tabernacle and emphasizes the need for careful handling and transportation of the vessels and implements used in worship. It serves as a reminder of the significance of reverence and order in approaching God’s presence.
