Numbers 4:22 (KJV)
Context
The book of Numbers is the fourth book of the Pentateuch, the first five books of the Bible. It records the Israelites’ journey from Mount Sinai toward the Promised Land. In chapter 4, the Lord gives Moses specific instructions about the Levites and their duties in the tabernacle. This verse is part of a larger census, for a similar count was taken of the Kohathites earlier in the chapter.
Meaning
Gershon was the eldest son of Levi, who was one of the twelve sons of Jacob. The Lord commands Moses to count the sons of Gershon “throughout the houses of their fathers, by their families.” This phrase shows that the census was organized by family groups, not just by tribe. The purpose was to number the eligible males fit for service, specifically those from thirty to fifty years old who would work in the Tent of Meeting. The Gershonites were responsible for transporting and caring for the curtains, coverings, and other materials of the tabernacle.
Biblical connections
The census was a divine command, not merely an administrative task. It ensured that every family had a defined role in the worship of God. Even though Gershon was the eldest son of Levi, his descendants were not excused from service; all were needed for the work. This mirrors the New Testament teaching that every believer has a part in the body of Christ, as seen in 1 Corinthians 12. There, Paul explains that each member is important and that the body functions properly only when all parts work together.
Application
This passage teaches the value of order and organization in God’s work. Assigning specific responsibilities to families and individuals helps tasks be completed effectively. It also highlights the importance of family in passing on faith and service. Each family within the Gershonites had unique skills, and their combined efforts kept the tabernacle functioning. In the church today, unity and cooperation among believers are essential. No role is insignificant, and every person has a part to play in advancing God’s kingdom.
Organisation and order: God values structure in worship and service.
Unity and cooperation: Each family’s work contributed to the whole.
Appreciation of individual contributions: Every person’s gift matters.
Reflection
God sees and values the service of every family and individual. The detailed record of the Gershonites shows that He cares about order and assigns specific responsibilities to His people. Even the eldest son of Levi was not exempt from service. This challenges us to consider our own place in God’s work. We may not carry the curtains of the tabernacle, but we each have duties in our families and churches. Let us serve faithfully, knowing that our labor is seen by God and contributes to His purposes.
