Numbers 5:2

Posted on 13 November 2023
Listen to this article

"Command the children of Israel, that they put out of the camp every leper, and every one that hath an issue, and whosoever is defiled by the dead:"

Context:The book of Numbers is the fourth book of the Bible and primarily focuses on the Israelites’ journey from Mount Sinai to the Promised Land. It contains various laws, regulations, and instructions given by God to the people of Israel during their time in the wilderness.

Explanation:In Numbers 5:2, God instructs Moses to command the children of Israel to remove certain individuals from the camp. Let’s examine the different categories mentioned:

Lepers:Leprosy was a prevalent disease in biblical times, and it caused severe disfigurement and isolation. Due to its contagious nature and the risk of spreading it to others, lepers were required to live outside the camp to protect the community’s health.

Those with an issue:This phrase refers to individuals experiencing abnormal genital discharges. The purpose of isolating them from the camp was again to prevent the potential spread of diseases and maintain the camp’s cleanliness.

Those defiled by the dead:This group includes individuals who had come into contact with a dead body, which would render them ceremonially unclean. In the Israelite community, cleanliness was highly significant, especially for participation in religious rituals and activities. Therefore, those who had touched a corpse needed to be separated from the camp until they underwent the prescribed purification process.

Lessons and Applications:

  • Physical and Spiritual Cleanliness:The instructions given by God in Numbers 5:2 emphasise the importance of cleanliness both in the physical and spiritual realms. In the Israelite camp, maintaining cleanliness was crucial for the overall health and well-being of the community. This principle extends to our spiritual lives as well, highlighting the need to keep ourselves free from sin and impurity through repentance and seeking God’s forgiveness.
  • Responsibility for Health:The passage reveals God’s concern for the health and welfare of His people. By instructing the removal of individuals with contagious diseases, God established guidelines for preventing the spread of illnesses within the community. This highlights the importance of taking responsibility for our health and well-being, as well as the well-being of others, by adhering to hygiene practices and seeking appropriate medical care when needed.
  • Holiness and Separation:The concept of separation in this passage illustrates the Israelites’ need to maintain a distinct identity as God’s chosen people. By setting apart those who were unclean or diseased, God emphasised the importance of holiness and purity. As believers today, we are also called to live lives that are set apart for God’s purposes, avoiding practices and influences that would defile our relationship with Him.
  • Compassion and Inclusion:While the passage focuses on the separation of certain individuals, it is essential to remember that God’s instructions were primarily concerned with preserving the well-being of the community. Nevertheless, the Bible encourages us to show compassion and care towards those who are sick or marginalised, even as we take necessary precautions for the health and safety of others.

Overall, Numbers 5:2 teaches us valuable lessons about cleanliness, holiness, personal responsibility, and compassion within the context of the Israelite community in the wilderness.
