Numbers 5:24

Listen to this article

“And he shall cause the woman to drink the bitter water that causeth the curse: and the water that causeth the curse shall enter into her, and become bitter.”

Context:Numbers 5 contains laws and instructions regarding various matters, including the purification and testing of a woman suspected of infidelity or unfaithfulness in marriage. This particular verse describes the process by which the suspected woman is to drink the bitter water.

Historical and Cultural Background:In ancient Israel, fidelity in marriage was highly valued, and adultery was considered a serious offense. The process described in this verse was designed to determine the guilt or innocence of a woman accused of adultery. The bitter water was believed to have a supernatural effect, revealing the truth.

Symbolism of the Bitter Water:The bitter water symbolizes a divine judgment or curse. The water is described as causing a curse, and when the woman drinks it, it enters her and becomes bitter. This process is seen as a supernatural means by which God exposes the truth.

God’s Omniscience and Justice:This passage reveals God’s omniscience and involvement in matters of justice. The trial by bitter water shows that God is concerned with matters of faithfulness and righteousness. It demonstrates His authority and ability to expose hidden sins and reveal the truth.

Trusting God’s Judgment:The bitter water test required trust in God’s judgment. The outcome of the trial was entirely dependent on God’s intervention. It was a way for the Israelites to submit their concerns to God and trust Him to bring justice.

Lessons for Today:While the practice of the bitter water test is not applicable today, there are some lessons we can draw from this passage. Firstly, it highlights the importance of fidelity and faithfulness in relationships. It also reminds us of God’s omniscience and His concern for justice. We can trust in God’s wisdom and righteousness to bring about justice in our lives.

Jesus and the New Testament Perspective:In the New Testament, Jesus emphasized the importance of purity of heart and faithfulness in relationships. He taught that even entertaining lustful thoughts is equivalent to committing adultery in one’s heart (Matthew 5:27-28). Jesus calls us to love one another and to be faithful in our commitments.

In summary, Numbers 5:24 presents a unique process used in ancient Israel to determine the guilt or innocence of a woman suspected of adultery. Although we don’t practice this today, it reminds us of the importance of fidelity, God’s omniscience, and His role as the ultimate judge. It also points us to Jesus’ teachings on purity of heart and faithfulness in relationships.
