Numbers 5:29

Posted on 13 November 2023
Listen to this article

“This is the law of jealousies, when a wife goeth aside to another instead of her husband, and is defiled.”

Context:Numbers 5:11-31 contains instructions for dealing with cases of suspected adultery or unfaithfulness within a marriage. The passage describes a ritual called the “trial of jealousy” that is conducted when a husband suspects his wife of infidelity but lacks evidence. The process involves the priest and the use of water mixed with dust from the tabernacle floor and ink from a written curse. The purpose of this ritual is to determine the guilt or innocence of the accused wife.

Understanding the cultural and historical context:In ancient Israelite society, marriage was considered a sacred covenant between a man and a woman. Adultery was a serious offence and was punishable by severe consequences. The ritual described in this passage is designed to ascertain the truth when there are suspicions of infidelity.

God’s concern for marital faithfulness:This passage reflects God’s concern for the sanctity of marriage and His desire for faithfulness between husbands and wives. God established marriage as a lifelong commitment, and adultery is viewed as a breach of trust and a violation of the marital covenant.

God’s provision for justice:The ritual described in Numbers 5:11-31 demonstrates God’s provision for justice and fairness in cases where there is uncertainty regarding marital fidelity. Instead of allowing unfounded accusations to ruin a marriage or allowing a guilty party to escape punishment, God provided a means to determine the truth.

The principle of divine intervention:The trial of jealousy described in this passage involves a supernatural intervention through the use of water mixed with dust and ink. This intervention symbolises God’s involvement in bringing about justice and revealing the truth.

Lessons for believers today:Importance of trust and faithfulness:This passage reminds us of the importance of trust and faithfulness in marriage. It encourages spouses to remain committed to each other and to maintain open communication to avoid situations that can lead to doubts and suspicions. God’s concern for justice:The ritual of jealousy shows God’s concern for justice and His desire to protect the innocent and punish the guilty. It teaches us the importance of seeking justice and truth in our relationships and communities. The need for supernatural intervention:In situations where the truth is unclear or where injustice prevails, we can trust in God’s ability to intervene and bring about justice. We should seek His guidance, wisdom, and discernment when facing difficult and uncertain circumstances. Restoration and reconciliation:While the focus of this passage is on identifying guilt or innocence, it also provides an opportunity for reconciliation. If the wife is found innocent, it allows for the restoration of trust and the healing of the relationship. God’s desire is always for the redemption and restoration of broken relationships.

In conclusion, Numbers 5:29 provides us with insight into God’s concern for the sanctity of marriage and His provision for justice in cases of suspected adultery. It emphasises the importance of trust, faithfulness, and seeking divine intervention in resolving conflicts and maintaining healthy relationships.
