Numbers 7:39

Posted on 16 November 2023
Listen to this article

“One young bullock, one ram, one lamb of the first year, for a burnt offering.”

Context:The book of Numbers is the fourth book in the Old Testament and provides an account of the Israelites’ journey from Mount Sinai to the edge of the Promised Land. In this particular verse, the context is the consecration and dedication of the altar by the leaders of the twelve tribes of Israel.

Meaning and Significance:

Burnt Offering:The burnt offering was a significant offering in the Old Testament sacrificial system. It was a voluntary offering where an entire animal was consumed by fire on the altar. The burnt offering symbolized complete surrender and dedication to God. By presenting these offerings, the Israelites demonstrated their commitment and devotion to God.

Symbolism of the Animals:In Numbers 7:39, three types of animals are mentioned for the burnt offering: a young bullock, a ram, and a lamb of the first year. Each of these animals carried symbolic meanings:

  • Young Bullock:The young bullock represented strength and power. It signified the strength of the tribe offering the sacrifice and their willingness to surrender their might to God. The bull was often associated with power and was considered a noble animal.
  • Ram:The ram symbolized submission and dedication. Rams were commonly used in sacrifice, and their submission to be offered represented the submission of the tribe’s leaders and their desire to worship God.
  • Lamb of the First Year:The lamb represented purity and innocence. It was to be a young lamb, without blemish, emphasizing the need for a perfect sacrifice. The lamb foreshadowed Jesus Christ, the perfect Lamb of God, who would offer Himself as the ultimate sacrifice for the sins of humanity.

Lessons and Applications:

  • Complete Dedication:The burnt offering serves as a reminder for us to dedicate our entire lives to God. Just as the Israelites offered their best animals, we are called to offer our best to God in terms of our time, talents, and resources. It is a call to surrender everything to Him and live a life of devotion.
  • Surrender of Strength and Power:The young bullock represents strength and power. It teaches us the importance of submitting our strengths, abilities, and accomplishments to God. We must acknowledge that our abilities come from Him, and we should use them in service to Him and for His glory.
  • Humility and Submission:The ram signifies humility and submission. It reminds us to humble ourselves before God, recognizing His authority and submitting our lives to His will. It also emphasizes the importance of servant leadership, as demonstrated by the leaders of the tribes offering their sacrifices.
  • Jesus as the Perfect Sacrifice:The lamb of the first year points to Jesus Christ, who became the ultimate sacrificial Lamb for the sins of humanity. Jesus’ sacrifice fulfilled the symbolism of the burnt offerings in the Old Testament, providing redemption and forgiveness for all who believe in Him.
  • Worship and Devotion:The burnt offering was an act of worship and devotion. It reminds us of the importance of worship in our lives. Our worship should be characterized by wholeheartedness, sincerity, and a desire to honor and glorify God in all that we do.

Conclusion:

Numbers 7:39 highlights the significance of the burnt offering and the symbolic meaning behind the animals offered. It calls us to surrender our lives, strengths, and accomplishments to God, while also reminding us of Jesus’ ultimate sacrifice as the perfect Lamb of God. May we strive to live lives of complete dedication and worship, offering ourselves as living sacrifices
