Numbers 11:2

Posted on 6 December 2023
Listen to this article

“And the people cried unto Moses; and when Moses prayed unto the LORD, the fire was quenched.”

Context:The book of Numbers is the fourth book of the Bible, and it describes the Israelites’ journey from Mount Sinai to the Promised Land. In Numbers 11, the Israelites are in the wilderness, having been delivered from slavery in Egypt. They had experienced God’s miraculous provision and were being led by Moses, their chosen leader.

Complaining and Fire:In Numbers 11:1, the people of Israel started complaining about their hardships in the wilderness. They were dissatisfied with their situation, particularly with the lack of variety in their food. In response to their grumbling, the anger of the Lord was kindled, and fire broke out among them, consuming some of the outskirts of the camp. This event emphasizes the consequences of their discontent and lack of trust in God.

Moses’ Intercession:When the people cried out to Moses in distress, he immediately turned to God in prayer on their behalf. Despite the people’s ungratefulness, Moses interceded for them, recognizing the severity of the situation and seeking God’s mercy and intervention.

Quenching of the Fire:In response to Moses’ prayer, the Lord heard and acted. He quenched the fire, preventing further destruction and harm to the people. God’s mercy and willingness to respond to Moses’ intercession demonstrate His compassion and concern for His people, even in their moments of disobedience and ungratefulness.

Lessons for us:

  • Complaining and discontentment:The Israelites’ complaining serves as a warning to us about the dangers of discontentment and grumbling. Instead of focusing on their deliverance and the provision of God, they became fixated on their present circumstances and desires. We should strive to cultivate a heart of gratitude and trust in God’s faithfulness, even in difficult situations.
  • The power of intercession:Moses’ response of intercession teaches us about the importance of prayer on behalf of others. Despite the people’s faults, Moses interceded for them, showing compassion and seeking God’s mercy. We, too, should be diligent in praying for others, even when they may not deserve it or have wronged us.
  • God’s mercy and response:This passage reveals God’s willingness to respond to the prayers of His people. He heard Moses’ plea and intervened by quenching the fire. It reminds us that God is gracious and compassionate, and He responds to genuine prayers offered in faith.

In summary, Numbers 11:2 highlights the Israelites’ complaint in the wilderness and the subsequent fire that broke out. Moses interceded on their behalf, and God responded by quenching the fire. This passage reminds us of the importance of gratitude, intercession, and God’s merciful response to our prayers.
