Numbers 11:35

Posted on 6 December 2023
Listen to this article

“And the people journeyed from Kibroth-hattaavah unto Hazeroth; and abode at Hazeroth.”

Context:The book of Numbers is part of the Pentateuch, the first five books of the Bible, and it recounts the journey of the Israelites from Egypt to the Promised Land. In Numbers 11, the Israelites were in the wilderness after leaving Mount Sinai. They had complained about their food and expressed a desire for meat. God heard their complaints and provided them with quails, but also sent a severe plague as a result of their greed and discontentment.

The people’s journey:The verse states that the people journeyed from a place called Kibrothhattaavah to Hazeroth. Kibrothhattaavah means “graves of craving” or “graves of lust.” It refers to the place where God granted the Israelites their request for meat and they ate until they were satisfied, but it also became a place of judgment, where many of them died due to the plague that followed. Hazeroth, on the other hand, means “enclosures” or “courtyards.” It is not mentioned in detail what happened during their stay in Hazeroth, but it was likely a temporary campsite during their journey through the wilderness.

Lessons from Numbers 11:35:

  • God’s provision:Despite the people’s complaining and lack of gratitude, God provided them with the quails they desired. This demonstrates God’s faithfulness and willingness to meet His people’s needs, even when they are ungrateful or discontented. It reminds us that God is a provider who cares for His people.
  • Consequences of discontentment:The Israelites’ complaints and cravings for meat revealed their lack of trust and satisfaction in God’s provision. Their discontentment led to disobedience and ultimately resulted in judgment. This serves as a warning against the dangers of discontentment, ingratitude, and craving after worldly desires. We should learn to be content and grateful for what God has provided, trusting that He knows what is best for us.
  • The importance of obedience:The journey from Kibrothhattaavah to Hazeroth serves as a reminder that disobedience and rebellion against God’s commands have consequences. The Israelites faced the severe plague because they disobeyed God’s instructions. Obedience to God’s word is essential in our lives as well. We should strive to follow His commands and trust in His wisdom and guidance.
  • God’s guidance in the wilderness:The Israelites’ journey through the wilderness was not aimless. God led them from one place to another, providing guidance and protection. Even though Hazeroth is not described in detail, it signifies a stage in their journey where they found rest and encampment. In our own lives, we can trust that God guides us through our own spiritual wilderness, providing us with rest and direction along the way.

In conclusion, Numbers 11:35 reminds us of God’s provision, the consequences of discontentment, the importance of obedience, and God’s guidance in our lives. It encourages us to trust in God’s faithfulness, be content with what He provides, and follow His commands as we journey through life.
