Numbers 13:20

Listen to this article

"And what the land is, whether it be fat or lean, whether there be wood therein, or not. And be ye of good courage, and bring of the fruit of the land. Now the time was the time of the firstripe grapes."

Context:The book of Numbers is the fourth book of the Bible and it recounts the journey of the Israelites through the wilderness towards the Promised Land. In Numbers 13, Moses sent out twelve spies, one from each tribe, to explore the land of Canaan and bring back a report.

The command to explore:Moses instructed the spies to gather information about the land they were about to enter. The verse mentions several aspects they were to consider: the fertility of the land ("whether it be fat or lean"), the presence of trees and vegetation ("whether there be wood therein, or not"), and to bring back some of the produce of the land ("bring of the fruit of the land").

Courage and faith:Moses encouraged the spies to be courageous as they ventured into the unknown. They were about to face challenges and potential enemies in Canaan, but Moses urged them to have faith and trust in God’s promise. The phrase "be ye of good courage" is a reminder that their confidence should be rooted in God’s presence and guidance.

The time of the firstripe grapes:The verse also provides a specific detail about the time when the spies were sent out. It was the season of the firstripe grapes. This detail suggests that the spies were sent at a time when the land was fruitful, and it was an opportunity to observe the bountiful produce and potential blessings of the land.

Spiritual lessons:This verse reminds us of the importance of seeking information and being prepared before making important decisions or embarking on new ventures. It encourages us to have courage and faith in God’s promises, even when faced with challenges or unknown circumstances. It also emphasizes the need to be observant and discerning, recognizing the blessings and opportunities that God has provided.

Overall, Numbers 13:20 teaches us the importance of faith, courage, and preparation as we step into new territories, reminding us to trust in God’s guidance and promises.
