Numbers 14:17

Listen to this article

“And now, I beseech thee, let the power of my Lord be great, according as thou hast spoken, saying,”

Numbers 14:17 is part of a prayer that Moses offered to God on behalf of the Israelites. To better understand the verse and its context, let’s explore the surrounding verses.

In Numbers 14, we find the Israelites at a pivotal moment in their journey towards the Promised Land. Twelve spies were sent to scout out the land of Canaan, and upon their return, they brought back a report of both abundance and challenges. Ten of the spies focused on the giants and strong opposition they saw, leading to fear and doubt among the people. However, Joshua and Caleb, the other two spies, expressed faith in God’s promise and encouraged the Israelites to trust in Him.

In response to the majority’s lack of faith, God became angry and expressed His intention to punish the Israelites by not allowing them to enter the Promised Land immediately. Moses interceded for the people, pleading for God’s forgiveness and mercy. Numbers 14:17 is part of Moses’ prayer, where he seeks God’s magnification or demonstration of His power according to His earlier promises.

Let’s break down the verse to explore its key elements:

  • "And now, I beseech thee": Moses humbly begins his prayer, acknowledging God’s presence and addressing Him respectfully.
  • "let the power of my Lord be great": Moses asks God to display His power. Here, "power" refers to God’s ability to perform mighty deeds and deliver on His promises.
  • "according as thou hast spoken, saying": Moses reminds God of His previous words, His promises to the Israelites. Moses implies that God’s greatness should be displayed in alignment with what He has spoken in the past.

In this verse, Moses is appealing to God’s mercy and reminding Him of His covenant promises. Moses acknowledges that God’s power is not in question, but he asks that God would magnify or demonstrate that power in a way consistent with His previous statements.

The broader context of Numbers 14 highlights the significance of this prayer. It shows Moses’ deep concern for the people and his desire to see God’s promises fulfilled. Additionally, this passage reveals God’s response and the consequences the Israelites faced due to their lack of faith and rebellion.

In conclusion, Numbers 14:17 captures Moses’ prayer for God’s power to be magnified in accordance with His promises. It serves as a reminder that we can approach God humbly, seeking His mercy and reminding Him of His faithfulness. This verse also teaches us about the importance of faith and the consequences of doubt and disobedience.
