Numbers 15:16

Posted on 15 December 2023
Listen to this article

“One law and one manner shall be for you, and for the stranger that sojourneth with you.”

Context:The book of Numbers is the fourth book of the Bible and is primarily concerned with the Israelites’ journey from Mount Sinai to the Promised Land. In this particular chapter, God instructs Moses regarding various offerings and sacrifices, including instructions for the people of Israel and the strangers (foreigners) who live among them.

Equality before the Law:The verse emphasizes the principle of equality before the law. It states that the same law and manner apply both to the native Israelites and to the strangers living among them. This demonstrates that in God’s eyes, there should be no distinction between the Israelites and the foreigners when it comes to justice and adherence to His commands.

Inclusion of Strangers:Throughout the Bible, God repeatedly reminds the Israelites to show kindness and justice to the strangers in their midst. The verse in Numbers 15:16 highlights this principle. God desires that the foreigners living among the Israelites would be treated fairly, ensuring they receive the same rights and responsibilities as the native Israelites.

Unity and Harmony:By establishing one law and one manner for both the Israelites and the strangers, God promotes unity and harmony within the community. This verse emphasizes the importance of treating others, regardless of their origin, in a just and fair manner. It encourages the Israelites to embrace the strangers, fostering a cohesive society centered around God’s principles.

Application Today:While this verse was specifically addressed to the Israelites in the context of their journey through the wilderness, the principle of equality and inclusion remains relevant today. It serves as a reminder for believers to treat all people with fairness and kindness, irrespective of their nationality or background. It also challenges us to examine our attitudes towards strangers and encourages us to extend hospitality and compassion to those who may be different from us.

Jesus and the Gospel:The principle of inclusion and equality found in Numbers 15:16 finds its ultimate fulfillment in the person and work of Jesus Christ. Jesus broke down the barriers that divided people, reconciling all nations to God through His death and resurrection. In Christ, there is no distinction between Jew or Gentile, native or foreigner (Galatians 3:28). As believers, we are called to follow His example, embracing and loving all people as fellow image-bearers of God.

In summary, Numbers 15:16 emphasizes the principle of equality and inclusion before the law. It reminds us to treat strangers with fairness and kindness, promoting unity and harmony within our communities. As believers, we are called to extend hospitality and love to all people, reflecting the example of Jesus Christ.
