Numbers 18:12

Posted on 25 December 2023
Listen to this article

“All the best of the oil, and all the best of the wine, and of the wheat, the firstfruits of them which they shall offer unto the LORD, them have I given thee.”

Context:The book of Numbers is the fourth book of the Bible and it records the events that occurred during the Israelites’ journey from Mount Sinai to the Promised Land. In this particular verse, God is speaking to Aaron, the high priest, and his sons, the Levites, who were set apart to serve in the Tabernacle.

Firstfruits:The concept of firstfruits is significant throughout the Bible. It refers to the first and best portion of the harvest or produce that is dedicated to God. In this verse, God instructs Aaron and the Levites that they are to receive the firstfruits of the oil, wine, and wheat that the Israelites bring as offerings.

Symbolism of oil, wine, and wheat:In biblical times, oil, wine, and wheat were considered valuable and essential commodities. They symbolise various aspects of life and blessing:

  • Oil: Oil in the Bible represents the anointing of the Holy Spirit, consecration, and healing. It was used in the anointing of priests and kings, and it often represents God’s favour and blessings.
  • Wine: Wine is associated with joy, celebration, and abundance. It symbolises God’s provision, blessings, and the joy of His presence.
  • Wheat: Wheat was a staple crop in ancient Israel, and it symbolises sustenance, nourishment, and provision. It represents the physical and spiritual blessings that come from God.

God’s provision for the priesthood:By giving Aaron and the Levites the firstfruits of the oil, wine, and wheat, God ensured that His chosen servants, who dedicated themselves to the service of the Tabernacle, were provided for. This provision was a way for God to bless and sustain the priesthood, acknowledging their role and importance in the worship and service of God’s people.

Application for believers today:While Numbers 18:12 specifically pertains to the Levitical priesthood, there are lessons we can draw from this verse for our lives today:

  • Prioritising God: Just as the Israelites were instructed to give the best portion of their offerings to the Lord, we are called to prioritise God in our lives. We should offer Him our firstfruits, including our time, talents, resources, and the best of what we have.
  • God’s provision: Just as God provided for the priesthood in ancient times, He promises to provide for His people today. When we honour God with our firstfruits, He blesses us and ensures our needs are met.
  • Gratitude and stewardship: Recognising that everything we have comes from God, we should approach our resources with gratitude and stewardship. Giving our best to God reflects our acknowledgement that He is the source of all blessings.

In summary, Numbers 18:12 highlights the importance of offering the firstfruits to God and recognising His provision. It teaches us to prioritise God in our lives, acknowledge His blessings, and be good stewards of what He has entrusted to us.
