Numbers 19:19

Listen to this article

“And the clean person shall sprinkle upon the unclean on the third day, and on the seventh day: and on the seventh day he shall purify himself, and wash his clothes, and bathe himself in water, and shall be clean at even.”

Context:To fully understand Numbers 19:19, it’s important to consider the broader context of the chapter. Numbers 19 addresses the laws of purification for those who have come in contact with a dead body or a grave. This purification process was necessary because contact with the dead rendered a person ceremonially unclean. Being unclean prevented the individual from participating in certain religious activities until they underwent the purification ritual described in this chapter.

The Process of Purification:Numbers 19:19 outlines the process of purification for a person who has become ceremonially unclean. According to this verse, a clean person (someone who has not come into contact with a dead body) is to sprinkle a mixture of water and the ashes of a red heifer on the unclean person on the third day and the seventh day. On the seventh day, the unclean person is required to purify themselves, wash their clothes, bathe in water, and then they would be considered clean by evening.

Symbolism and Spiritual Lessons:The purification process described in Numbers 19:19 carries symbolic significance and spiritual lessons for believers. The red heifer used in this purification ritual symbolised purity and the shedding of blood for the removal of sins. This foreshadowed the ultimate sacrifice of Jesus Christ, who would offer His blood for the forgiveness and purification of sins.

The repetition of the third and seventh days in the purification process highlights the importance of completion and fullness in God’s plan. The number seven often represents perfection and completion in the Bible. This suggests that the purification process needed to be carried out fully and completely to achieve the desired result of cleansing.

Additionally, the washing of clothes and bathing in water emphasise the need for external cleanliness. While this ritual had a physical component, it also symbolises the inner cleansing of the heart and mind. It reminds believers of the importance of repentance and seeking God’s forgiveness to be spiritually clean.

Application:Although the specific purification ritual described in Numbers 19:19 is not applicable in the same way today, there are practical and spiritual lessons we can draw from it. As Christians, we are called to pursue holiness and maintain a pure heart before God.

Just as the Israelites were required to go through a process of purification, we should regularly examine our hearts and seek forgiveness for our sins. This involves confessing our sins to God, repenting, and turning away from them. The blood of Jesus Christ, shed on the cross, cleanses us from all unrighteousness when we place our faith in Him.

Furthermore, the concept of completion and fullness teaches us to persevere in our pursuit of holiness. We should not be content with partial obedience or half-hearted efforts but strive to live fully for God. Regular self-examination, prayer, and studying God’s Word help us maintain spiritual cleanliness and grow in our relationship with Him.

In conclusion, Numbers 19:19 provides instructions for the purification process in the Old Testament, highlighting the need for cleanliness after contact with a dead body. As Christians, we can draw spiritual lessons from this passage, emphasising the importance of seeking forgiveness, maintaining purity of heart, and striving for completeness in our relationship with
