Numbers 20:10

Posted on 25 December 2023
Listen to this article

“And Moses and Aaron gathered the congregation together before the rock, and he said unto them, Hear now, ye rebels; must we fetch you water out of this rock?”

Context:The book of Numbers describes the journey of the Israelites through the wilderness after their liberation from Egypt. In this particular passage, the Israelites are in the desert of Zin, and they have been complaining about the lack of water.

Moses and Aaron’s Actions:Moses and Aaron gathered the congregation before a rock in response to the people’s complaints. Instead of following God’s specific instructions, Moses speaks out in frustration, calling the people rebels. He questions whether he and Aaron have to provide water for the people once again.

Disobedience:God had given Moses clear instructions to speak to the rock in order to bring forth water (Numbers 20:8). However, Moses disregarded God’s command and instead struck the rock twice with his staff (Numbers 20:11). This act of disobedience had consequences.

Lack of Faith:Moses’ actions in this passage indicate a lack of faith in God’s provision. Instead of trusting in God’s word, Moses took matters into his own hands by striking the rock. This lack of faith resulted in him dishonouring God’s instruction and not giving God the glory for the miracle.

Consequences:As a result of Moses’ disobedience, God said to him in Numbers 20:12: “Because ye believed me not, to sanctify me in the eyes of the children of Israel, therefore ye shall not bring this congregation into the land which I have given them.” Due to this incident, Moses was prohibited from entering the Promised Land.

Lessons for us:This passage teaches us several important lessons. It reminds us of the significance of obeying God’s specific instructions. It highlights the importance of faith and trust in God’s provision. It also warns us about the dangers of allowing frustration and anger to lead us into disobedience.

God’s Grace:Although Moses faced the consequence of not entering the Promised Land, it is important to remember that God is gracious and forgiving. Moses’ disobedience does not negate the fact that he had a close relationship with God and served as an instrumental leader for the Israelites. This incident serves as a reminder of the importance of obedience, but it does not diminish God’s love and grace.

In conclusion, Numbers 20:10 highlights Moses’ disobedience and lack of faith in God’s provision. It teaches us the importance of obedience, faith, and trust in God’s instructions. Additionally, it reminds us of the consequences that may result from disobedience.
