Numbers 22:11

Listen to this article

“Behold, there is a people come out of Egypt, which covereth the face of the earth: come now, curse me them; peradventure I shall be able to overcome them, and drive them out.”

In this passage, we find the story of Balaam, a prophet who was summoned by Balak, the king of Moab. Balak was concerned about the Israelites, who had left Egypt and were now encamped near his land. He feared their numbers and strength and sought to curse them in order to hinder their progress and ultimately drive them out of the region.

Divine Protection:Despite Balak’s fears, it is important to note that the Israelites had the protection and favour of God. They had been miraculously delivered from slavery in Egypt through the leadership of Moses and were guided by God’s presence in the form of a pillar of cloud by day and a pillar of fire by night. This divine protection made them a formidable force.

God’s Promises:God had made specific promises to the Israelites to bless and multiply them, to give them the land of Canaan as their inheritance, and to be with them in their journey. Balak’s attempt to curse them would not override God’s promises. It serves as a reminder that God’s plans cannot be thwarted by human efforts.

Balaam’s Role:Balaam was a prophet who had a reputation for being able to bless or curse people based on God’s guidance. Balak sought to hire him to curse the Israelites. Initially, God prohibited Balaam from going with Balak’s messengers, but after persistent requests, God allowed Balaam to go but with the condition that he would only speak what God instructed him to say.

The Spiritual Battle:Balak’s request to Balaam reveals a spiritual battle taking place behind the scenes. Balak recognised the Israelites as a threat not only militarily but also spiritually. He believed that cursing them would weaken them and give him an advantage. However, the true battle was between the plans and purposes of God and the forces aligned against Him.

Ultimately, as the story unfolds, we see that Balaam, under God’s guidance, blesses the Israelites instead of cursing them. This outcome emphasises the power of God’s protection and the fulfilment of His promises to His people.

In studying this verse, we can learn important lessons about God’s faithfulness, His sovereignty over human plans, and the significance of aligning ourselves with His purposes. It also reminds us that when we face challenges or opposition, we can trust in God’s presence and His ability to turn any curse into a blessing.
