Numbers 24:4

Posted on 23 January 2024
Listen to this article

"He hath said, which heard the words of God, which saw the vision of the Almighty, falling into a trance, but having his eyes open."

Context:The book of Numbers records the events that took place during the Israelites’ journey from Mount Sinai to the Promised Land. In this particular chapter, Balak, the king of Moab, sought to curse the Israelites through the prophet Balaam. However, instead of speaking curses, Balaam was divinely inspired to bless the Israelites.

Balaam’s experience:In Numbers 24:4, Balaam describes his personal encounter with God. He testifies that he heard the words of God and saw the vision of the Almighty. The verse mentions that Balaam fell into a trance, but his eyes were open. This implies that he entered into a state of spiritual receptivity, where he received divine revelations and had a heightened awareness of God’s presence.

Divine revelation:Balaam, although a pagan prophet, was chosen by God to deliver messages on His behalf. Despite Balak’s attempts to manipulate Balaam into cursing the Israelites, Balaam remained obedient to God’s commands and spoke only what God directed him to say. Through this experience, we see God’s sovereignty in using even unlikely messengers to accomplish His purposes.

Spiritual implications:

  • Openness to God: Balaam’s trance-like state with open eyes symbolises the importance of being spiritually open and receptive to God’s leading. It suggests that we should seek a deeper level of communion with God, allowing Him to speak to us and reveal His will.
  • Divine inspiration: Balaam’s experience highlights the power of God’s direct communication with His people. It demonstrates that God can use various means, even visions and trances, to convey His messages. As believers, we should seek God’s guidance and be open to the different ways He chooses to communicate with us.
  • God’s faithfulness: Despite Balak’s intentions, God protected and blessed the Israelites through Balaam’s words. This emphasises God’s faithfulness in fulfilling His promises and defending His people. It reminds us that no human plans or schemes can ultimately stand against God’s purposes.

Application:

  • Cultivate spiritual receptivity:Seek a deeper relationship with God through prayer, meditation, and studying His Word. Develop an attitude of openness and surrender to His leading.
  • Obey God’s commands:Like Balaam, prioritise obedience to God over personal desires or external pressures. Trust that God’s plans are ultimately for your good and His glory.
  • Trust in God’s faithfulness:When faced with challenges or opposition, remember that God is faithful to His promises. Rely on His strength and guidance, knowing that He will protect and bless you according to His perfect will.

Remember, studying the Bible involves not only understanding the historical context and textual meaning but also drawing practical lessons and applying them to our lives. May you find inspiration and guidance through the study of God’s Word.
