Listen to this article

“God brought him forth out of Egypt; he hath as it were the strength of a unicorn: he shall eat up the nations his enemies, and shall break their bones, and pierce them through with his arrows.”

Historical Context:Numbers 24 is part of the narrative in the book of Numbers that describes the events during the Israelites’ wilderness journey. In this chapter, the prophet Balaam, who was summoned by King Balak to curse the Israelites, blesses them instead under God’s inspiration.

Symbolism of “God brought him forth out of Egypt”:This phrase refers to the Exodus, when God miraculously delivered the Israelites from slavery in Egypt. It highlights God’s faithfulness and power in redeeming His people and leading them out of bondage. It serves as a reminder of God’s ability to deliver and protect His chosen ones.

“He hath as it were the strength of a unicorn”:The term “unicorn” in the King James Version is a translation of the Hebrew word “re’em.” The exact identity of the animal is uncertain, but it is generally understood to be a strong and powerful creature. In this verse, it signifies the strength and might of the Israelites, empowered by God, to overcome their enemies.

“He shall eat up the nations his enemies”:This phrase suggests that the Israelites, under God’s guidance, will prevail over their adversaries. It reflects the fulfilment of God’s promise to give the Israelites victory over the nations that opposed them in their journey to the Promised Land.

“Shall break their bones, and pierce them through with his arrows”:This imagery depicts the extent of the destruction that God would bring upon the enemies of Israel. It signifies a complete and thorough defeat of those who oppose God’s people. It emphasises God’s role as a warrior on behalf of His chosen ones.

Overall, Numbers 24:8 portrays God’s power, faithfulness, and protection over His people, as well as His ability to bring about victory over their enemies. It serves as a reminder that God is the ultimate source of strength and deliverance, and those who trust in Him will experience His mighty works on their behalf.
