Listen to this article

"And he took up his parable, and said, Balaam the son of Beor hath said, and the man whose eyes are open hath said"

Context:Numbers 24:15 is part of a larger narrative found in the book of Numbers. It recounts the story of the prophet Balaam, who was summoned by the Moabite king, Balak, to curse the people of Israel. However, God intervened and prevented Balaam from pronouncing curses. Instead, Balaam blessed the Israelites several times, speaking under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit.

Prophetic Utterance:In this verse, Balaam begins his final oracle or prophecy regarding the Israelites. Balaam, acknowledging his divine inspiration, presents his words as a parable, indicating that the message has a deeper meaning beyond its literal interpretation. This verse highlights the authority and truthfulness of Balaam’s prophetic message.

Balaam the Son of Beor:Balaam is introduced as the son of Beor. He was a non-Israelite prophet from the land of Pethor. God spoke to Balaam and used him to convey His message to the nations. Despite Balaam’s initially wicked intentions, God turned his curses into blessings for Israel, demonstrating His sovereignty and ability to work through unlikely instruments.

The Man Whose Eyes Are Open:This phrase refers to Balaam himself. It emphasizes his unique spiritual insight and understanding. Balaam’s eyes were open to receive divine revelation and discern spiritual truths. It suggests that Balaam had a special ability to perceive and comprehend God’s will, which enabled him to deliver accurate prophecies.

Application:The verse reminds us of God’s sovereignty in using even unlikely individuals to accomplish His purposes. It also highlights the power of God’s Spirit to reveal truth and open the eyes of individuals to perceive spiritual realities. As believers, we should seek to have our eyes opened by God, allowing us to see and understand His truth.

Overall Message:The entire prophecy of Balaam, including this verse, proclaims blessings upon Israel and foretells their future victories and triumphs. Despite the initial intentions of Balak to curse Israel, God intervened and turned the curses into blessings. This reinforces the divine protection and favour that God extends to His people.

It is important to study the surrounding verses to gain a deeper understanding of the entire prophecy and its fulfilment throughout Israel’s history. Taking into account the historical context and the subsequent events in the book of Numbers can provide further insights into the significance of Balaam’s words.

Remember, Bible study is an ongoing process, and it is beneficial to consult commentaries, study guides, and engage in discussions with fellow believers to gain a comprehensive understanding of the Scriptures.
