Numbers 25:8

Posted on 24 January 2024
Listen to this article

“And he went after the man of Israel into the tent, and thrust both of them through, the man of Israel, and the woman through her belly. So, the plague was stayed from the children of Israel.”

This verse is part of a larger narrative found in Numbers 25, which recounts a significant event in the history of the Israelites during their time in the wilderness. The Israelites had encamped in Shittim, and while they were staying there, they began to engage in sexual immorality and idolatry with the Moabite women. This behavior was a departure from their covenant with God and His commandments.

Verse 8 focuses on the actions of Phinehas, the grandson of Aaron and a priest. In response to the Israelites’ sinful behaviour, God sent a plague among them, causing a significant number of deaths. In the midst of this crisis, an Israelite man brought a Midianite woman into his tent, seemingly to engage in further idolatrous and immoral acts.

However, Phinehas, filled with zeal for God’s honour and holiness, took decisive action. He followed the man into the tent and thrust a spear through both the Israelite man and the Midianite woman, killing them. Phinehas’ swift and drastic action was an act of righteousness and a display of his loyalty to God.

As a result of Phinehas’ zealous act, God stopped the plague that had been afflicting the Israelites. In the subsequent verses, God commends Phinehas and promises him an everlasting priesthood and a covenant of peace.

This passage highlights several key points:

  • God’s expectation of holiness:The incident at Shittim demonstrates God’s desire for His people to remain faithful and obedient to Him. The Israelites’ involvement in sexual immorality and idolatry was a direct violation of their covenant relationship with God and His commandments.
  • The role of Phinehas:Phinehas’ actions demonstrated his unwavering commitment to God’s honour and righteousness. He took a stand against sin and acted decisively, resulting in the cessation of the plague. Phinehas’ example reminds us of the importance of standing up for what is right and taking action when necessary.
  • God’s response:God recognised and rewarded Phinehas’ faithfulness. Through His covenant with Phinehas, God ensured that Phinehas and his descendants would hold the priesthood perpetually. This demonstrated God’s approval of Phinehas’ actions and highlighted the significance of his role in preserving the purity and holiness of the priesthood.

Overall, Numbers 25:8 underscores the importance of maintaining faithfulness to God and upholding His commandments. It teaches us the significance of taking a stand against sin and honouring God’s holiness, even when faced with challenging circumstances.
