Numbers 26:18

Posted on 24 January 2024
Listen to this article

“These are the families of the children of Gad according to those that were numbered of them, forty thousand and five hundred.”

Context:The book of Numbers is the fourth book of the Bible, and it primarily focuses on the journey of the Israelites through the wilderness after their exodus from Egypt. The verse in question, Numbers 26:18, is a part of a census conducted by Moses and Eleazar the priest to count the Israelite men who were eligible for military service.

Explanation:

Numbers 26:18 specifically refers to the descendants of the tribe of Gad. In this verse, it states that the families of the children of Gad numbered forty thousand and five hundred. The census was conducted to determine the size and strength of each tribe and to assign them their respective territories once they entered the Promised Land.

The tribe of Gad descended from Gad, who was one of the sons of Jacob (Israel) and Zilpah, Leah’s maid (Genesis 30:9-11). As part of the twelve tribes of Israel, Gad played a significant role in the history and establishment of the nation.

Application:

  • Faithfulness in recording history:The act of counting and recording the numbers of the tribes in the Bible demonstrates the faithfulness and meticulousness of God in keeping a record of His people. This attention to detail emphasizes the importance of preserving history and the genealogies of God’s chosen people.
  • God’s faithfulness in multiplication:The growth of the tribe of Gad from the time of Jacob to the generation of the Exodus is evident. They multiplied from a small family to a multitude of forty thousand and five hundred. This serves as a reminder that God fulfils His promises, blesses His people, and multiplies them according to His plans.
  • Individual significance within a community:While the verse emphasizes the collective number of the tribe of Gad, it is essential to remember that each individual within the tribe had a unique role and contribution. Similarly, within our own communities and churches, each person has value and purpose in God’s greater plan. We should recognise and appreciate the significance of every individual within the body of Christ.
  • Stewardship of God’s blessings:The significant number of the Gadites underscores the responsibility of stewarding the blessings God bestows upon us. As God multiplied the tribe of Gad, He also provided them with a specific land inheritance. Likewise, God blesses us with various gifts, talents, and resources, and we are called to use them wisely and for His glory.

In conclusion, Numbers 26:18 highlights the growth and numerical strength of the tribe of Gad during the time of Moses. This verse reminds us of God’s faithfulness, the importance of recording history, and the significance of each individual within a community. It also prompts us to be good stewards of the blessings God has given us.
