Numbers 26:50
These are the families of Naphtali according to their families: and they that were numbered of them were forty and five thousand and four hundred.
Numbers 26:50 (KJV)
Context
The book of Numbers tells how the Israelites traveled from Mount Sinai to the edge of the Promised Land. Numbers 26 records a second census, taken on the plains of Moab after the rebellion of Korah. This census counted the new generation of men aged twenty and above who were able to serve in the army. It prepared them for the conquest of Canaan and for the fair division of the land among the tribes. The careful counting shows that God values order and readiness as His people move toward what He promised.
Meaning
Naphtali was the sixth son of Jacob and the second son of Bilhah, Rachel’s handmaid. His descendants formed one of the twelve tribes of Israel. The verse lists the families of Naphtali and gives their total number: 45,400 men fit for military service. This number shows the tribe’s strength and its role in the nation. It also shows that God cares about order and details, because each family was counted carefully. Every person mattered, and each family had a place in the larger community.
Biblical connections
The first census in Numbers 1:43 recorded 53,400 men from Naphtali. The second census shows a decrease to 45,400. This decline contrasts with some other tribes that grew. It reminds us that God remained faithful to His people even through judgment and change. The tribe later settled in the northern region of Canaan, near the Sea of Galilee, a fertile and strategically important area. This connection shows how the census helped determine where each tribe would live. The decrease also teaches that God’s purposes do not depend on numbers alone; He preserves a people for Himself even when they become smaller.
Application
The census teaches us the value of unity and organization. Each tribe had its own identity and responsibilities, but they worked together as one nation. In the same way, believers today are called to cooperate and support one another. The large number of men in Naphtali also demonstrates God’s provision. He equipped the tribe with strength to defend themselves and to help conquer the land. God still equips His people for the tasks He gives them. He counts each believer as part of His family, and He gives every person a role in His work. When we serve together, we reflect the order and care that God showed in the wilderness.
Reflection
This verse reminds us that God sees and values every person. Each name and family was recorded, showing that no one was forgotten. It also assures us of God’s faithfulness to His covenant promises. He had promised the land to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, and this census was a step toward that promise. Even in the wilderness, God was preparing His people for what lay ahead. We can trust that God is at work in our lives too, even when we cannot see the full picture. He is faithful to complete what He has begun, and He will lead us into the promises He has made.
