Numbers 26:65
For the Lord had said of them, They shall surely die in the wildernesse: and there was not left a man of them, saue Caleb the sonne of Iephunneh, and Ioshua the sonne of Nun. Numbers 26:65 (KJV)
The book of Numbers recounts the journey of the Israelites through the wilderness after their liberation from Egypt. In this passage the Lord pronounces a judgment upon the generation that doubted His promises and rebelled during their wanderings, declaring that they would die in the wilderness while only Caleb and Joshua would be permitted to enter the Promised Land.
To grasp the significance of Numbers 26:65 we must review the events that led up to it. After the miraculous exodus, the people wandered forty years because of disobedience and lack of faith. They repeatedly complained, rebelled, and even longed to return to Egypt. Consequently God declared that none of the adult generation who had left Egypt would inherit the land, except for Caleb and Joshua.
Numbers 14 records the Israelites’ lack of faith when the twelve spies returned from Canaan. The majority gave a negative report, stirring fear and doubt among the people. Only Caleb and Joshua trusted God’s promises and urged the nation to rely on Him. Their faith stood in stark contrast to the prevailing rebellion.
Because of their steadfast trust, Caleb and Joshua were spared the judgment that fell on the rest of the generation. Their wholehearted devotion was rewarded with an inheritance in the Promised Land, as recorded in Joshua 14:6‑15. Their example demonstrates that faithfulness to God’s promises brings divine preservation and blessing.
The passage reminds believers today of the importance of trusting God’s promises. It underscores the serious consequences of disobedience and lack of faith, while highlighting the reward for those who remain steadfast. We are encouraged to emulate Caleb and Joshua, maintaining faith amid doubt and opposition, and to rely on God’s faithfulness and provision in our own lives.
Overall, Numbers 26:65 confirms the judgment on the faithless generation and underscores the faithfulness of Caleb and Joshua. It calls us to trust God’s promises, remain faithful to Him, and understand the consequences of disobedience and lack of faith.
