Numbers 27:8

Posted on 26 January 2024
Listen to this article

“And thou shalt speak unto the children of Israel, saying, If a man die, and have no son, then ye shall cause his inheritance to pass unto his daughter.”

Context:The book of Numbers is the fourth book in the Old Testament and primarily focuses on the journey of the Israelites through the wilderness. It contains various laws, regulations, and historical accounts of the Israelites during their time in the wilderness.

Inheritance Laws:In Numbers 27:8, we encounter a situation where a man dies without having a son. In ancient Israelite society, inheritance typically passed from father to son, ensuring the continuity of family lineage and the preservation of family property. However, this verse presents an exception to that rule. In cases where a man dies without a son, his inheritance is to pass to his daughter.

Equality and Fairness:This verse reflects a significant shift in the cultural norms of the time. It demonstrates that God’s laws are concerned with fairness and equality, even in a society where men generally held more rights and privileges. By allowing daughters to inherit their father’s property, this law ensured that women were not left destitute and that their welfare was protected.

God’s Concern for All:This verse emphasizes God’s concern for all individuals, regardless of gender. It shows that God cares about the well-being and rights of women, ensuring that they are not excluded from the inheritance of their fathers. This principle aligns with other passages in the Bible that emphasize the equal value and dignity of both men and women before God.

Implications:This law also has broader implications for society. It promoted stability and prevented the concentration of wealth and power within a few families. It recognized the worth and capability of daughters to manage family resources and make responsible decisions regarding inheritance.

New Testament Application:While this law was specifically given to the Israelites in the Old Testament, it highlights principles of justice, equality, and God’s concern for all people. In the New Testament, we see Jesus affirming the worth and value of women and treating them with dignity and respect. The apostle Paul also emphasizes equality among believers, stating, “There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free, there is no male and female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus” (Galatians 3:28, ESV).

In conclusion, Numbers 27:8 demonstrates God’s concern for fairness and equality, ensuring that daughters were not excluded from inheriting their father’s property. It challenges societal norms of the time and affirms the worth and value of women. This verse highlights God’s desire for justice and equality among all individuals, and it carries broader implications for society.
