Numbers 29:15

Listen to this article

“And one kid of the goats for a sin offering unto the LORD shall be offered, beside the continual burnt offering, and his drink offering.”

Context:Numbers 29 describes the various offerings and sacrifices to be made during the appointed times or feasts of the Lord. It outlines the offerings to be presented on the fifteenth day of the seventh month, which is the Feast of Tabernacles or Sukkot. This was an important festival in the Hebrew calendar.

Key Points:

  • Sin Offering:In verse 15, we see that along with the continual burnt offering and its drink offering, one kid of the goats is to be offered as a sin offering to the Lord during the Feast of Tabernacles. The sin offering was a sacrifice made to atone for the sins of the people. It was a recognition of human sinfulness and the need for forgiveness and reconciliation with God.
  • Atonement for Sin:The offering of the kid of the goats for a sin offering symbolized the need for the people to seek forgiveness for their sins and to be reconciled with God. Sin creates a separation between humans and their Creator, and the sin offering was an act of acknowledging and seeking restoration of that broken relationship.
  • The Feast of Tabernacles:The Feast of Tabernacles was a seven-day festival in which the people of Israel dwelled in temporary booths or shelters, commemorating their time of wandering in the wilderness. It was a time of celebration, thanksgiving, and remembrance of God’s provision and faithfulness. The various offerings during this feast were part of the worship and rituals associated with this festival.
  • Continual Burnt Offering:Along with the sin offering, the verse mentions the continual burnt offering and its drink offering. The continual burnt offering was a sacrifice offered daily as a symbol of complete dedication to God. It served as a reminder of the ongoing commitment to worship and serve the Lord.

Lessons and Applications:

  • Recognition of Sin:The sin offering reminds us of the seriousness of sin and the need for repentance and forgiveness. It teaches us to acknowledge our sins before God, seek His forgiveness, and strive to live in righteousness.
  • Atonement through Christ:As Christians, we recognise that the Old Testament sacrificial system pointed to Jesus Christ, who became the ultimate and perfect sacrifice for our sins. His death on the cross atoned for our sins once and for all, providing forgiveness and reconciliation with God.
  • Worship and Thanksgiving:The Feast of Tabernacles and its offerings were times of celebration and thanksgiving. Similarly, we can learn from this passage to express gratitude to God for His faithfulness, provision, and presence in our lives. We can engage in worship and thanksgiving, recognising God’s goodness and grace.
  • Commitment and Dedication:The continual burnt offering signifies ongoing commitment and dedication to God. As believers, we are called to offer our lives as living sacrifices, wholly devoted to God’s service (Romans 12:1). We should strive to live in constant surrender to His will, seeking to honour Him in all aspects of our lives.

Overall, Numbers 29:15 emphasises the importance of recognising and dealing with sin, seeking forgiveness and atonement, and living in a continual attitude of worship and dedication to God.
