Numbers 32:23

Listen to this article

“Be sure your sin will find you out.”

This verse is part of a larger passage in the book of Numbers that deals with the request of the tribes of Reuben and Gad, along with half of the tribe of Manasseh, to settle in the land east of the Jordan River rather than in the Promised Land west of the Jordan. Moses granted their request on the condition that they first join the other tribes in conquering the Promised Land.

In Numbers 32:20-23, Moses responds to the tribes of Reuben and Gad, saying:

“And Moses said unto them, If ye will do this thing, if ye will go armed before the Lord to war, And will go all of you armed over Jordan before the Lord, until he hath driven out his enemies from before him, And the land be subdued before the Lord: then afterward ye shall return, and be guiltless before the Lord, and before Israel; and this land shall be your possession before the Lord. But if ye will not do so, behold, ye have sinned against the Lord: and be sure your sin will find you out.”

In this context, Moses warns the tribes that if they fail to fulfill their commitment to help conquer the Promised Land and instead settle east of the Jordan, their sin would eventually be exposed and judged. Moses is emphasizing the principle that sins and wrongdoings are not hidden from God; eventually, they will be brought to light and have consequences.

This verse carries a broader message applicable to all believers. It reminds us of the importance of integrity, obedience, and accountability in our actions. It underscores the idea that we cannot hide our sins or escape the consequences of our choices and behaviours.

As Christians, it is vital to recognize that God sees everything we do and that we are accountable to Him. It encourages us to live with honesty, righteousness, and a genuine commitment to following God’s commands. While it may seem tempting to think we can hide our sins or evade the consequences, this verse reminds us that God’s justice and truth will prevail.

In summary, Numbers 32:23 serves as a reminder that our sins will ultimately be exposed and have repercussions. It emphasizes the importance of living a life of integrity and obedience to God, knowing that He sees all and holds us accountable for our actions.
