Numbers 33:47

Listen to this article

“And they removed from Almondiblathaim, and pitched in the mountains of Abarim, before Nebo.”

Context:The book of Numbers is the fourth book of the Bible and provides a detailed account of the Israelites’ journey from Mount Sinai to the edge of the Promised Land. In this chapter, Moses recounts the various locations where the Israelites camped during their forty years of wandering in the wilderness.

Journeying in the Wilderness:Numbers 33 records the stages of the Israelites’ journey through the wilderness. Each time they moved from one location to another, they would pitch their tents and set up camp until it was time to move again. The verse you mentioned describes one of the stops along their journey.

Almondiblathaim:Almondiblathaim was a location where the Israelites camped during their wilderness wanderings. The exact location of Almondiblathaim is uncertain, but it was likely somewhere in the wilderness of Moab, east of the Jordan River.

The Mountains of Abarim:After leaving Almondiblathaim, the Israelites pitched their tents in the mountains of Abarim. The mountains of Abarim were a range of mountains situated in the territory of Moab, overlooking the Jordan Valley. This particular camp was positioned “before Nebo,” which suggests that it was in the vicinity of Mount Nebo.

Mount Nebo:Mount Nebo holds significant importance in biblical history. It is the mountain from which Moses viewed the Promised Land before he passed away (Deuteronomy 34:1-5). Although Moses was not allowed to enter the Promised Land due to his disobedience, God showed him the land from a distance as a gracious act. The Israelites camped in the mountains of Abarim, close to Mount Nebo, as they continued their journey toward the land that God had promised them.

Spiritual Lessons:While this verse may appear as a simple geographical record, it reminds us of the Israelites’ journey through the wilderness and their ultimate destination, the Promised Land. It serves as a reminder of God’s faithfulness in leading His people, despite their failings and wanderings. It also highlights the significance of obedience, as Moses’ disobedience prevented him from entering the Promised Land. We can learn from this example to faithfully follow God’s instructions and trust in His leading in our own lives.

In conclusion, Numbers 33:47 recounts one of the stops the Israelites made during their wilderness journey. They camped in the mountains of Abarim, near Mount Nebo, as they continued their journey toward the Promised Land. This verse reminds us of God’s faithfulness, the importance of obedience, and the ultimate fulfilment of His promises.
