Listen to this article

And the border shall goe on to Ziphron, and the goings out of it shall bee at Hazar Enan: this shall be your North border. Numbers 34:9 (KJV)

Context: In this verse God is speaking to Moses and providing instructions for dividing the land of Canaan among the tribes of Israel. This particular verse focuses on defining the northern border of the land. The border begins at Ziphron (also spelled Ziphon), a place traditionally thought to be located in modern‑day Lebanon, and extends to Hazar‑en‑an, a site generally associated with the region near Homs, Syria, though its precise location remains uncertain and some propose it may have been near the Syrian border or around Aleppo. It is important to note that this verse is part of the larger passage in Numbers 34 (verses 1‑15), where God describes the boundaries of the promised land. The specific details of these borders were crucial for the equitable distribution of the land among the twelve tribes of Israel. This passage demonstrates God’s faithfulness in fulfilling His promise to the descendants of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. It also highlights the meticulous planning and attention to detail that God displayed in ensuring that each tribe received its allotted portion of the land. By studying and understanding these geographical details we can appreciate the historical context and the significance of God’s covenant with His people. Additionally, this passage serves as a reminder of God’s sovereignty, His commitment to His promises, and His concern for the equitable division of resources among His people.
