Listen to this article

“Of the tribe of Benjamin, Elidad the son of Chislon.”

Context:Numbers 34 records the instructions given by God to Moses regarding the division of the land of Canaan among the tribes of Israel. The chapter outlines the boundaries of the Promised Land and the leaders from each tribe who would help in the distribution of the land.

Explanation:

Numbers 34:21 specifically mentions Elidad, the son of Chislon, from the tribe of Benjamin. This verse identifies Elidad as the representative from the tribe of Benjamin who would assist in the division of the land. The tribe of Benjamin was one of the twelve tribes of Israel, descending from Benjamin, the youngest son of Jacob (also known as Israel).

Key Points:

  • Land Distribution:God commanded the Israelites to divide the land of Canaan as an inheritance among the twelve tribes. Each tribe would receive its portion of land, which would be allotted based on its size and population. Representatives were chosen from each tribe to assist in the distribution process.
  • Elidad:Elidad, mentioned in Numbers 34:21, was appointed as the representative from the tribe of Benjamin. Although we do not have extensive information about Elidad in the Bible, his selection for this task implies that he was respected and trusted within his tribe.
  • Tribal Unity:The appointment of representatives from each tribe in the land distribution process highlights the importance of unity and cooperation among the tribes of Israel. The division of the land was a significant event that required collaboration and fairness to ensure the equitable distribution of the Promised Land.

Lessons to Learn:

  • Trust in God’s Promises:Numbers 34 reminds us of God’s faithfulness in fulfilling His promises. The division of the land was a fulfillment of God’s covenant with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. It serves as a reminder that God keeps His promises and remains faithful to His people.
  • Collaboration and Unity:The appointment of representatives from each tribe emphasizes the value of working together and maintaining unity. The tribes of Israel had to cooperate in order to accomplish the task of dividing the land. Likewise, as believers, we are called to work together in unity for the advancement of God’s Kingdom.
  • Recognition of Leaders:The appointment of leaders from each tribe demonstrates the importance of wise and capable individuals in carrying out specific tasks. It is crucial to recognize and utilize the skills and talents of individuals within the community to accomplish shared goals.

Overall, Numbers 34:21 highlights the selection of Elidad from the tribe of Benjamin as a representative in the division of the Promised Land. This verse reminds us of the significance of collaboration, trust in God’s promises, and the importance of wise leadership within the community.
