Numbers 35:16

Posted on 9 March 2024
Listen to this article

“And if he smite him with an instrument of iron, so that he die, he is a murderer: the murderer shall surely be put to death.”

Context:The book of Numbers is part of the Pentateuch, the first five books of the Old Testament. It contains various laws and regulations given by God to the Israelites as they journeyed through the wilderness towards the Promised Land. Numbers 35 specifically addresses the establishment of cities of refuge, which were designated places where someone who accidentally caused the death of another person could find protection from potential avengers seeking revenge.

Protection of Human Life:In Numbers 35, God gives instructions to Moses regarding the allocation of cities of refuge. These cities were intended to provide safety and protection for individuals who unintentionally caused the death of another person. The verse in question, Numbers 35:16, emphasizes the severity of intentional murder. It states that if someone uses an iron instrument to strike and kill another person, they are considered a murderer and should face capital punishment.

Value of Human Life:This verse highlights the sanctity and value of human life in God’s eyes. It demonstrates that God views intentional killing as a grave offense and places a high importance on justice. The principle behind this commandment is reflected in the Sixth Commandment found in Exodus 20:13, “You shall not murder.” God desires to protect and preserve human life, and this verse serves as a deterrent against acts of violence and murder.

Application:While this verse speaks specifically about intentional murder and the consequences in the context of ancient Israel, it also provides broader principles that are applicable today. As believers, we are called to respect and value human life. Jesus further emphasized this principle in the New Testament when He taught about loving our neighbours and even our enemies (Matthew 5:43-48). Christians are called to promote peace, reconciliation, and justice in society, striving to protect and preserve life rather than harm it.

Grace and Redemption:It’s important to note that although Numbers 35:16 speaks of the severe punishment for intentional murder, the concept of cities of refuge demonstrates God’s mercy and provision. These cities were established to ensure that someone who accidentally caused another person’s death would have a fair trial and be protected from retribution. They provided an opportunity for the accused to seek refuge and find redemption through due process. This reflects God’s desire for justice tempered with mercy and the opportunity for repentance and restoration.

In conclusion, Numbers 35:16 conveys the gravity of intentional murder and the requirement for capital punishment in the Old Testament context. It emphasizes the value God places on human life and serves as a reminder of the sanctity of life. As Christians, we are called to uphold the principles of justice, respect for life, and the pursuit of peace, seeking opportunities for redemption and reconciliation even in the face of such serious offences.
