Deuteronomy 1:19

Posted on 9 March 2024
Listen to this article

“And when we departed from Horeb, we went through all that great and terrible wilderness, which ye saw by the way of the mountain of the Amorites, as the LORD our God commanded us; and we came to Kadesh-barnea.”

Context:The book of Deuteronomy is part of the Pentateuch, the first five books of the Bible attributed to Moses. It contains Moses’ final messages to the Israelites before they enter the Promised Land. In this verse, Moses recounts the journey of the Israelites from Mount Horeb (also known as Mount Sinai) through the wilderness to Kadesh-barnea.

Wilderness experience:The wilderness mentioned in this verse refers to the vast and challenging desert terrain that the Israelites had to traverse after leaving Mount Horeb. This wilderness journey lasted for forty years as a consequence of the Israelites’ disobedience and lack of faith in God’s promises. It serves as a powerful lesson about the importance of trust and obedience to God.

God’s command:Moses emphasizes that the Israelites followed God’s command to journey through the wilderness. This highlights the significance of obedience to God’s instructions in their journey toward the Promised Land. God led them step by step, providing guidance, protection, and provision along the way.

The mountain of the Amorites:The mention of the mountain of the Amorites refers to a significant landmark along the route. It may symbolize the challenges and obstacles the Israelites faced as they encountered various hostile nations inhabiting the land. Despite these challenges, the Israelites were to remain steadfast in their faith in God’s promises.

Kadesh-barnea:The Israelites eventually reached Kadesh-barnea, an important location near the southern border of Canaan. It was here that God instructed Moses to send spies to explore the land of Canaan, the Promised Land. The events that transpired at Kadesh-barnea, including the Israelites’ lack of faith and subsequent punishment, are recounted in the following verses of Deuteronomy.

Lessons to learn from Deuteronomy 1:19:

  • Obedience to God:The verse highlights the importance of obedience to God’s commands. Just as the Israelites followed God’s instructions, we should seek to obey His Word in our lives, even when faced with challenges or uncertainty.
  • Trust in God’s guidance:The wilderness journey symbolizes the various trials and difficulties we may encounter in life. Just as God led the Israelites through the wilderness, we can trust in His guidance and provision as we navigate our own journeys.
  • Consequences of disobedience:The forty-year wilderness journey serves as a reminder that disobedience and lack of faith can lead to prolonged seasons of testing and delay in experiencing God’s promises. It underscores the importance of faithfulness and trust in God’s faithfulness.
  • God’s faithfulness:Despite the hardships and challenges faced by the Israelites, God remained faithful to His promises. Similarly, we can find assurance in God’s faithfulness and steadfast love as we journey through life.

As you delve deeper into the book of Deuteronomy and the events that unfolded after this verse, you will discover further insights and lessons that can be drawn from the Israelites’ experiences. May this Bible study encourage you to trust in God’s guidance, obey His commands, and remain faithful to Him in all circumstances.
