Deuteronomy 3:12

Posted on 13 March 2024
Listen to this article

"And this land, which we possessed at that time, from Aroer, which is by the river Arnon, and half mount Gilead, and the cities thereof, gave I unto the Reubenites and to the Gadites."

Historical Context:Deuteronomy is the fifth book of the Bible and part of the Pentateuch, which consists of the first five books attributed to Moses. It is a record of Moses’ speeches to the Israelites before they entered the Promised Land. In this particular verse, Moses recounts the events that took place during the Israelites’ conquest of the Transjordan region.

Geographical Reference:The verse mentions the specific locations of the land that was possessed by the Israelites at that time. Aroer was a city located near the river Arnon, and half of Mount Gilead, along with its cities, was given to the Reubenites and the Gadites, two of the twelve tribes of Israel.

Inheritance of the Reubenites and Gadites:The Reubenites and the Gadites were two of the tribes of Israel that requested land on the eastern side of the Jordan River, rather than within the boundaries of the Promised Land. Moses granted their request, and they received the conquered land of Aroer, half of Mount Gilead, and its surrounding cities as their inheritance.

Lessons and Applications:

  • Keeping Promises:In this passage, we see Moses fulfilling his promise to the Reubenites and Gadites, demonstrating the importance of honouring commitments. It reminds us of the value of integrity and trustworthiness in our own lives.
  • Contentment vs. Covetousness:The Reubenites and Gadites were content with the land on the eastern side of the Jordan, which was suitable for their livestock. This teaches us the importance of being content with what God has provided for us, rather than constantly desiring more and being driven by greed.
  • Unity within Diversity:The division of the land among the tribes of Israel shows the unity and cooperation required for a community to thrive. Despite receiving their inheritance on the eastern side of the Jordan, the Reubenites and Gadites continued to support the other tribes in the conquest of the Promised Land.
  • God’s Faithfulness:The fulfilment of the promise to the Reubenites and Gadites serves as a reminder of God’s faithfulness. He kept His word to the Israelites and provided for their needs, even in unique circumstances. This encourages us to trust in God’s faithfulness in our own lives, knowing that He will fulfil His promises to us as well.

Remember, the Bible study on Deuteronomy 3:12 should be supplemented with further study of the surrounding verses and cross-references to gain a deeper understanding of the historical context and the overall message of the passage.
