Deuteronomy 3:14
Jair the son of Manasseh took all the country of Argob unto the coasts of Geshuri and Maachathi; and called them after his own name, Bashan–havoth–jair, unto this day.
Deuteronomy 3:14 (KJV)
Context
Deuteronomy records Moses’ final speeches to Israel before they entered the Promised Land. In chapter 3, Moses recounts the conquest of the Transjordan region east of the Jordan River, including the defeat of the Amorite kings Sihon and Og. Verse 14 focuses on Jair, a descendant of Manasseh, one of the tribes descended from Joseph.
Meaning
Jair took all the country of Argob, a fertile and well-fortified part of Bashan, formerly the kingdom of Og. His territory extended to the borders of Geshuri and Maachathi, small neighboring kingdoms. He renamed the region Bashan-havoth-jair, meaning “the villages of Jair,” a common ancient practice that established ownership and commemorated his victory. The name endured “unto this day,” marking the lasting legacy of his conquest.
Biblical connections
This verse connects to Numbers 32:41, where Jair’s initial capture of the towns is recorded. Joshua 13:29-30 confirms that these towns were part of the inheritance allotted to the half-tribe of Manasseh. The broader narrative shows Moses allotting Gilead and Bashan to Manasseh, fulfilling God’s promise to give Israel the land.
Application
Jair’s act of naming the land after himself reflects a human response to God’s gift—claiming and memorializing the inheritance. It illustrates how individual leaders participated in the divinely promised conquest, and how God’s faithfulness is demonstrated in providing and preserving the promised inheritance for His people throughout history.
Reflection
This verse gives insight into the settlement patterns of the Israelite tribes in the Transjordan area. It shows how tribal members established their presence in the land allotted to them, and how personal and tribal identities were reinforced through place-names. It reminds readers that God’s promises are fulfilled through the faithful actions of His people.
