Deuteronomy 4:47

Listen to this article

“And they possessed his land, and the land of Og king of Bashan, two kings of the Amorites, which were on this side Jordan toward the sunrising;”

This verse is part of a passage where Moses is recounting the Israelites’ journey and conquests as they prepared to enter the Promised Land. Here, Moses is reminding the Israelites of the victories they achieved over the Amorite kings Sihon and Og.

Here are some key points and themes that can be drawn from this verse:

  • Divine Providence:Throughout the book of Deuteronomy, Moses emphasises God’s guidance and protection of the Israelites. This verse underscores the idea that it was God who enabled the Israelites to possess the land of Og king of Bashan. It reflects the divine intervention and providence in the conquest of the Promised Land.
  • Fulfillment of Promise:The conquest of the land of Og is part of the fulfilment of God’s promise to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob to give their descendants the land of Canaan as an inheritance. This verse demonstrates how God is faithful to His promises and fulfils them in His timing.
  • Victory over Enemies:The mention of defeating Og king of Bashan highlights the military victories of the Israelites under the leadership of Moses. It serves as a reminder to the Israelites of God’s power and faithfulness in delivering them from their enemies.
  • Historical Context:Understanding the historical context is crucial for interpreting this verse. The Amorites were one of the peoples inhabiting the land of Canaan, and their kings posed a significant obstacle to the Israelites’ possession of the Promised Land. By defeating Sihon and Og, the Israelites demonstrated their military prowess and their faith in God’s promise to give them the land.
  • Geographical Reference:The mention of “this side Jordan toward the sunrising” provides a specific geographical reference point for the location of the land conquered by the Israelites. It helps to situate the events described in a particular context and reinforces the historical authenticity of the narrative.

Overall, Deuteronomy 4:47 serves as a reminder of God’s faithfulness, His provision, and His role in the victories of the Israelites as they journeyed towards the fulfilment of His promises. It also emphasises the importance of remembering and reflecting on God’s past interventions as a source of encouragement and faith for the future.
