Deuteronomy 6:3

Posted on 7 April 2024

Heare therefore, O Israel, and obserue to do it, that it may be wel with thee, and that ye may increase mightily, as the Lord God of thy fathers hath promised thee, in the land that floweth with milke and hony. Deuteronomy 6:3 (KJV)

Historical Context: Deuteronomy is part of the Torah, specifically the fifth book of Moses. It contains the final speeches of Moses to the Israelites, delivered just before they entered the Promised Land. The verse in question is part of Moses’ exhortation to the people, urging them to obey God’s commandments and to live in a way that pleases Him.

Key Themes:

Obedience: The verse emphasizes the importance of both hearing and doing what God commands. The Israelites are called to listen attentively and observe God’s commandments.

Blessings: By following God’s instructions, the people are promised that it will be well with them. They can expect to prosper and increase mightily in the land that God has promised, a land flowing with milk and honey.

The Call to Hear and Observe: The verse begins with the call, “Hear therefore, O Israel.” It underscores the need for attentive listening. The Israelites were to pay careful attention to God’s instructions as they were about to embark on a new phase of their journey.

The Connection to Obedience and Blessing: The passage highlights the connection between obedience and blessings. It emphasizes that if the Israelites observe God’s commandments and live according to His ways, they can expect well‑being and increase in the Promised Land. This promise of prosperity and abundance is associated with the idea of a land flowing with milk and honey, symbolic of fertility and richness.

Application to our Lives:

Active Listening: We are called to be attentive to God’s Word. It involves more than simply hearing; it requires active engagement, understanding, and application in our lives. We should strive to listen to God’s voice through Scripture and seek His guidance.

Obedience and Blessing: The principle of obedience leading to blessings applies to believers today. As we align our lives with God’s commandments and live in obedience to Him, we can experience His blessings, which may manifest in various forms such as spiritual growth, provision, and fulfillment of His promises.

Trusting in God’s Promises: Just as the Israelites were called to trust in the promises of God for the land of Canaan, we too are encouraged to trust in God’s promises for our lives. When we obey His commands, we can have confidence that He will fulfill His promises and lead us into a place of spiritual abundance and well‑being.
