Deuteronomy 6:25

And it shall be our righteousnes, if we obserue to doe all these Commandements, before the Lord our God, as he hath commanded vs. Deuteronomy 6:25 (KJV)

Context: Deuteronomy, the fifth book of the Old Testament, records Moses’ final speeches to the Israelites before they entered the Promised Land. In this verse Moses stresses that obedience to God’s commandments is the foundation of true righteousness.

The pursuit of righteousness: The passage declares that observing and keeping God’s commandments leads directly to righteousness. Here righteousness means being in a right relationship with God and living according to His holy standards.

The importance of obedience: Obedience is presented not merely as rule‑keeping but as an expression of love and reverence for God. By faithfully obeying the commandments, the Israelites demonstrated their devotion and faithfulness to the LORD.

The standard of righteousness: Moses calls the people to observe “all these commandments,” a comprehensive body of law known as the Mosaic Law. The expectation is total compliance—no selective adherence, no addition or subtraction from what God has given.

A response to God’s commands: The phrase “as he hath commanded us” reminds the Israelites of their obligation to follow God’s instructions exactly as delivered. It underscores that true obedience respects the completeness of God’s revealed will.

Our righteousness: The verse concludes that such wholehearted obedience results in righteousness. In the covenant context, righteousness is not earned by human merit but is a direct outcome of faithful adherence to God’s commands.

Application for believers today: Although addressed to ancient Israel, the principle endures for Christians. Our righteousness is rooted in a relationship with Jesus Christ, and obedience to His teachings flows naturally from that relationship. While we are not justified by works, a life that honors God’s precepts reflects the righteousness granted through faith.
